CityPlace Tree Lighting – Holiday Events in West Palm Beach Nov 11

Tree

CityPlace in West Palm Beach is a fabulous destination for sights and shopping at any time of year. The Old World-inspired architecture, airy décor and selection of upscale shops and dining invites many a fine evening or afternoon of relaxation and light-hearted fun.

However, in just a few days, CityPlace will become so much more magical. Drop by the evening of Saturday, November 14 for the official holiday kick-off and CityPlace Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The scenic outdoor mall will be alive with holiday fervor as visitors pile around the massive 40′ tree in eager anticipation. Stilted acrobats will roam the crowd, performing tricks and dazzling guests as they build up to the big illumination. Drop in early that afternoon to grab a parking space, do a little shopping and then find a great vantage point.

When it’s finally 6:00 p.m., officials will light the great tree to the cheers of the crowd, followed by the season’s first snowfall. That’s right, snowfall. During the season, it “snows” every day at CityPlace, but don’t worry, you won’t need a coat.

Start your holiday fun early this year at the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at CityPlace in West Palm Beach, Florida. It’s all happening just a few miles away from Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Hotel.

Have fun!

Palm Beach Fall Festivals – Oktoberfest Oct 08

Dust off those beer steins and “tap” to the beat of polka because tonight’s all about the brats and brews.

Tonight at Cityplace in West Palm Beach, the kick-off starts for one of the largest German celebrations in the country. Join the German-American Club of the Palm Beaches for a polka-party just as it should be. Guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort will have direct access to the frontlines of fun.

oktoberfestFor two weekends, Oktoberfest will bring in many more imports into Lake Worth, Florida than normal. Envision Munich’s Oktoberfest on a much smaller scale and you’re prepared. If not, here’s a run down of what to plan for over the weekend.

Oktoberfest will run October 9 1 11, 2009 and October 16 – 18, 2009, rain or shine on ten acres of tummy tumbling and clog-kickin’ fun. While there will be plenty to do for adults and kids (of all ages) including kiddy carnival rides, arts and crafts, there’s a little more to the main showcase.

Authentic food and brews will be brought in and include: bratwurst, leberkase, German pastries, sauerkraut, potato salads and directly imported Original Hofbrau Bier from Munich.

Entertainment will include traditional folk dancing performances, booths by vendors and craftsmen, a specified ‘kids zone’, Biergarten, and the headliners? Two bands to conduct sing-alongs straight from Munich’s very own Oktoberfest.

Two more must-sees during this event are the Parade of Flags and the Beer-Tapping Ceremony. And should you show up for the festivities, you’ll have a chance to win a free trip from Miami to Germany from AirBerlin.

Palm Beach Events – Mounts Botanical Garden on Mother’s Day May 08

That’s right, readers, this weekend is a special one for some seriously special ladies – Mother’s Day.

Here’s a quick recap and history lesson for you. Social activist Julia Ward Howe penned A Mother’s Day Proclamation as a call to peace after being inspired by Ann Jarvis, who attempted to unite women and improve the sanitary conditions through Mothers’ Work Days.

The third largest card selling holiday and second most popular gift-giving one after Christmas, Mother’s Day was declared a national holiday the second Sunday of May in 1914 by President Wilson. This declaration came after the first official celebration campaigned by Jarvis’ daughter in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia.

If you’re in Palm Beach, or stealing away for some well-deserved rest at Hilton Singer Island’s Oceanfront Resort, this is just for you. To celebrate the endless generosity and care of our loving mothers, take her out for a time to relish the natural beauty that abounds within their hearts and in nature every day. South Florida Events – SunFest Musical and Art Festival 2009 Apr 28

As you could probably tell by now, I’m all about everything that’s fun under the sun – now, I’m taking it literally.

SunFest 2009Tomorrow marks the beginning of SunFest, Florida’s largest waterfront music and art festival. Founded in 1982 and held annually in downtown West Palm Beach, it attracts more than 280,000 visitors during the first week of May.

Held from April 29 until May 3, the festival grounds are sure to be brimming with activity. Featuring an impressive entertainment lineup on 3 different stages featuring well known artists like 311, Citizen Cope, David Cook, James Taylor and Matt Nathanson. For a full listing of SunFest’s entertainment lineup, check the festival’s Web site.

Guests at Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort, you’re in a prime position to stroll on in to the festival only a short ride to Flagler Drive away (20 MI). For those of you wanting in on the wild weekend, book your bed now.

Personally, I’d be satisfied with the music selection over the course of the festival but the fun doesn’t stop there. Opening Friday, May 1, at 5 p.m. juried artwork will be on display from over 165 national artists with tours and demonstrations available to visitors. This exhibit features paintings, photography, jewelry, sculptures, pottery and ceramics.

Alright, so if you’re not what you consider the “artsy” type, there’s more even you can appreciate at this downtown destination worth your while.

On the waterfront float barges boasting extracurricular activity – Captain Morgan’s Oasis invites visitors to enjoy drink specials, house DJs and dueling pianos while riding the waves of the Intracoastal Waterway.

Too much to do and too little time only makes mentioning SunFest that much more important – create your own oasis and soak up the sun while you mingle with artists into next week, whether it’s through photography or funky music, SunFest is the place in West Palm Beach this weekend.

Ticket and festival information can be found here.

Admission varies depending on duration of pass. 1-day: $31, 5-day $65. Youth 6-12, 1-day: $10, 5-day: $22, Children 5 and under: Free

Parking not controlled by SunFest – see website for more information. Coolers, pets, scooters/bicycles, professional still/video cameras, weapons not allowed inside SunFest gates.

South Florida Entertainment – Clematis by Night Apr 21

Sure, we’re big fans of basking in the sun on the beach and kicking back in the sand but there’s more fun to be had – when the sun sets, the music begins and West Palm Beach can toot its horn over this one.

We’ve mentioned Clematis Street before but kept to its charming allure of boutiques and various venues to find fashion and fun from the Intracoastal Waterway through downtown.  I’m thinking that a weekly featured, fantastic show of musical talent and tunes is definitely a winner of its own specific mention.clematis-street-west-palm-beach

Clematis by Night is produced by the City of West Palm Beach Mayor’s Office in partner with the Division of Community Events keen on drawing on the inescapable delight in a vast array of music. Performances are scheduled weekly by music groups to the tune of Latin, R&B, reggae, rock, blues, soul, and swing.

Events scheduled for the Centennial Square weekly “Fountainside Series” can be found in a monthly calendar on the website for the area’s Hot Spot to Chill.

Featuring rotating talent groups every Thursday from 6:00 pm – 9:30 p.m., it’s the best deal in downtown for fun with the perfect price: free!

Two of my favorites in “harmony” and at one location: trendy finds with music in mind. Be sure to tune in and don’t forget to find a hot spot of your own to relax after your concert in the city’s center at Hilton Singer Island’s Oceanfront Resort.

One Opera in One Hour | Harriet Himmel Theatre Feb 24

Head over to the Harriet Himmel Theatre at CityPlace in downtown West Palm Beach on March 7th for an evening of free entertainment like you’ve never seen before. The esteemed Palm Beach Opera is presenting the third and final show in its utterly unique “One Opera in One Hour” series.

That’s right! An entire opera, rich with passion, intrigue, majesty and music, is presented for free in only one hour in the beautiful Harriet Himmel Theatre. The incredible works are much abridged, of course, but that does nothing to hamper the magic. A spoken introduction prepares the audience for the unusual format and provides fascinating information to set the scene. This is followed by musical highlights presented by the Palm Beach Opera’s masterful resident artists. Staging is minimal, allowing the players to delve deeper than ever into the raw power of the work.

For their final selection, the Palm Beach Opera presents Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohéme, the stirring tale of a lively seamstress’s torrid love affair with a Bohemian poet and the sad ways in which it wasn’t meant to be. It’s not too far removed from Moulin Rouge!.

This one-night-only show will be held at the Harriet Himmel Theatre on March 7, 2009 at 9:00 p.m. Admission is free, though you can purchase select seating for a $15 donation. Learn more about it here.

A little La Bohéme to get you in the mood:
