Palm Beach Attractions – 9 Things To Do On 09/09/09 Sep 09

In the spirit of the hoopla surrounding the last single digit date for the next 92 years, we here at homebase decided to do a little something special.

Why is 09/09/09 so significant you ask? Here’s a little trivia for you, even if seemingly meaningless to some.

If 9 is multiplied by any other number, from 2 to 9, the two digits of the answer will add up to nine. Example – 2 x 9 = 18. The numbers 1 + 8 = 9. September 9 is the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 + 2 = 9). The date also falls on a Wednesday and both Wednesday and September have 9 letters.

The Tim Burton science fiction film “9″ comes out today, Wednesday the 9th. Hand-stitched robots battle for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. How many? You guessed it – nine.

Several hotels have been offering discounts for today’s date – rooms priced around $99.

Many couples are making good on today’s date, too – talk about an anniversary you could never forget. In some countries and cultures, it stands with greater significance than simply aiding memory. In major Chinese dialects, the word used for “nine” is similar in sound to that for “long-lasting”.

Even the “so-called” marriage capital of Las Vegas is capitalizing on the date. The Stratosphere is one of many hotel casinos set for shotgun weddings; in fact, 99 couples will wed at 9:09 p.m. for, that’s right, $99.09.

Now, for Florida’s Top 9 Things to Do & See:

And what better way to see all these things while in Palm Beach? Be a guest at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort and with service decked out to the “nine’s” you’ll be on – yep, that’s right – cloud nine.

Palm Beach Attractions – Palm Beach Kennel Club Aug 25

Palm Beach has gone to the dogs.

More literally than figuratively.

But guests of the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort and South Floridians, never fear.

The Palm Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room has a legacy as long as the four-legged friends that frequently appear on the track.

In 1932, the Club brought greyhound racing and pari-mutuel wagering to Palm Beach County on Wednesday, February 17. Packed with people waiting to get their “paws” on bets, 4,000 attended the grand opening of this now premier entertainment complex some 77 years later.

Estimated to have turned 32 million patrons over the years, with wagers well over billions, greyhound racing has become Palm Beach’s #1 spectator sport.

The racing track isn’t the only thing to go barking mad over, either. The Kennel Club also offers a 60-table Poker room with regularly scheduled tournaments, as well as a vast array of dining choices.

As one of the oldest and most competitive racetracks in the country, the Palm Beach Kennel Club is elegant, expansive, and extraordinary. While it’s nothing like a stroll on Clematis, it gives some the same thrill as finding fashion. Fascination comes in all kinds and the Palm Beach Kennel Club is something to see – whether you’re betting on pooches or playing cards.

Palm Beach Things To Do – A Latte Fun Indoor Playground & Cafe Aug 20

In my constant hunt for out of the norm, but not out of the way, fun under the sun for you Floridians and beach lovin’ bums, I often find places with as much character as the people who visit!

Today’s no different.

This one’ll make “A Latte Fun” for families and “a latte” difference, too.

Started by a mother of four who took a trip to find her sanity after the corporate world, and to spend time with her babies, it dawned on her.

She adored the little ones but came to a quick realization that: she and the kiddos needed to get out of the house and she didn’t have any place of her own to be equally happy as her kids. Different ages, different environments – different needs! The charm of this place and this story is evident in the sheer size of this dream turned reality.

4,000 square feet sprawled with carpet and playthings is her vision come to life – supervised play and pampering for the parents. It doesn’t get better than this, and whether you vacation or live in South Florida, it’s worth seeing for the sake of appreciating its ingenuity.

For the kids, there’s plenty to do:

  • Large inflated slide
  • Trampoline
  • Foam pit
  • Climbable lighthouse
  • Reading corner
  • Infant/Crawler area
  • Pretend Play area, with kitchen!
  • Market and Dress up
  • Building, riding, sorting, creating, play toys

And for the parents? Get this:

  • Coffee drinks
  • Healthy food options
  • Plush sofas and chairs
  • Wifi Internet
  • Mellow music
  • Supervised play for your children

So you can kick back and relax on your own or socialize with other parents (and finish your sentence) while your kids have a blast in a safe, and arguably creative environment. Socked feet are a must, so as to preserve a safe and clean environment for kids and grown ups.

Palm Beach Things To Do – Art After Dark Jul 30

If you just so happen to be around Clematis Street in Palm Beach on the second Thursday of August, you’ve got a shot at double the fun than normal.

The Norton Museum of Art has been running an Art After Dark program that, conveniently enough, pairs up with Clematis by Night! The joint program is called “Hot Hop” for Palm Beach’s Hop Palm electric cars that’ll take you from the museum down to Centennial Square for further late night festivities.

The Art After Dark program features activities, art (surprise), live music, film screenings and refreshments.

The galleries themselves are open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. but the various activities they run, as well as the cash bar on site, will stay open until 9:00 p.m. Feel free to sip on something bubbly as you scour busts in sculpture sections, or peruse the paintings lining the walls. If neither are for you, creativity comes in all shapes, sizes and mediums so fear not, you may find your own inspiration!

Though the area is famed for some seriously fancy fashion and being the favorite of many deep-pocketed patrons, the museum’s admission won’t follow the trend.

Admission for adults is $8, 13 to 21 $3, and children under 12? Free, not unlike the concerts that will follow at Centennial Square.

August 13, 2009, themed “Off The Wall” will feature do-it-yourself artistry, a 30-minute gallery tour, Yoga with Therese Abair of Living Fit Today, as well as hip-hop, pop, top hits, and reggae music from DJ Rumble.

Read a detailed schedule here.

And if you get hunger pains, shoot ‘em down with a shot and a taco chaser at Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila, also on Clematis Street.

  • Big Thunder – largest water ride in Florida, four person tubes and 20 mph speeds.
  • Pirate’s Plunge – 2 speedy slides with a 7 story drop, turns, twists, and dips.

Palm Beach Dining – Michael R. McCarty’s Jun 26

You might not expect a native New Yorker to forgo the boom and bustle of the city that never sleeps for one that’s full of beachfront bums and a gnarly night scene.

This one did.

Tropical breezes and swaying palms are quite the shift in scenery from a life lived in the Big Apple where commuters on foot can travel faster than four wheels, and it’s exactly what the Michael McCarty, owner of Michael R. McCarty’s Restaurant and Saloon, did.

The restaurant bearing his name has long become one of the few prestigious places to pop in and see in Palm Beach. An experienced restaurateur, it wasn’t until 2002 that McCarty purchased Dempsey’s to redesign, and redefine dining elegance and prestige by opening the restaurant after his own name.

It all started with his first visit with friends to Palm Beach in 1973 – so stricken by South Florida’s tropical beauty, he returned annually up until his purchase and opening of the restaurant.

Its traditional home-cooked dishes, friendly staff and healthy crowd of familiar regulars are world renowned. The outdoor terrace is a charming touch to an establishment comprised of British Colonial décor, with the beach breeze at your back and the moonlight night overhead. Unique to the restaurant, too, is “Rory’s” the restaurant’s bar and sitting room, covered in pink patent leather couches and cushioned chairs. Both the terrace and Rory’s are as available and prepared for romping regulars or the rental of private parties, be they for lunch, dinner, or solely celebration! See pictures and menus here.

Whether or not you’ve got a picky palette, there’s something to tickle your taste buds – even if you opt for a scrumptious soufflé or the freshest seafood and steak. Get yourself a rack of lamb, the Grilled Atlantic Salmon or if you’re after something from down home, try the Homemade Meatloaf. Or if you’ve got the need to sate your sweet tooth, Bread Pudding and Allie’s Cupcakes will serve you just as fine as the staff in a relaxed, refreshingly unique elegance that suits the Palm Beach people, visitors or native.

Pick a wicker seat and kick your feet up for some fun with friends, or make some new ones. Michael R. McCarty’s is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. serving brunch, lunch, and dinner. Drinks are served until 3:00 a.m.

Broward County Things To Do – Songwriter’s Showcase Jun 16

If you’d like your shot at reminiscing with timeworn tributes, or hearing what could be the next smash hit on the billboards, here’s your chance.

Personally, I’m a big music fan and there’s nothing better than being the first ear to something special, and something, or someone with promise to top the pop charts or sail the industry’s waves to stardom.

songwriter's showcaseEvery third Tuesday of the month, the Songwriter’s Showcase welcomes local, national, and international singers and songwriters to the Broward Center for Performing Arts.

Founded by Chrystal Hartigan, the event not only showcases these artists ready to toot their tune but welcomes aspiring artists and lyricists to share their work.

The curtains open at 8:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts’ Abdo New River Room, and the cover charge is $5 at the door.

A cash bar, too, is available for you to toast the promising artists crooning their material, or while you count flat notes and those brave souls as they stick it to stagefright for your personal entertainment.

For more information on the event, please visit the Broward Center for Performing Arts’ Web site or call (954) 462-0222.

Palm Beach Attractions – The Square Grouper/Castaways Marina Jun 01

the square grouper and castaways marinaFans of sippin’ on somethin’ early at the beach or any bar, and Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort guests can agree, this place is something to see.

Though it’s no Ta-boo, This Tiki bar will tickle you pink when you’ll find yourself familiar with its claim to fame – The Square Grouper and Castaways Marina is precisely the point on the map where Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson recorded “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.”

“Cast away” your worries and toss your friends a line while you wait on your drink from this quirky little beer bar, or have something special poured for you from a Gatorade cooler – it’s “cooler” like that, don’tcha know.

Reggae rumbas with country (credit to more Buffet tunes) over the heads of the crowd that collects around this little treasure amidst the palm trees. Regular drink specials and live music is scheduled for patrons, as well as frequent special events for fundraisers and benefits. There’s nothing like having a beer with Buffet on the boat to benefit the Jupiter Beach or Lighthouse.

Although it’s not some place you’ll find suits and ties, you’ll find a good time and taste the tune of Jackson and Buffet’s carefree jive only complimented by the view of the waving water and Jupiter Lighthouse.

With white sand beneath your toes and boats with buoys bobbing feet away, raise your glass to memories present and past; recline even if just for a minute to say you’ve seen the birthplace of the duo’s lush-lover tune after you tether your boat.

If you stop by for lunch, if and when you’re told it’s “too early” for a boozy brew, tell ‘em it doesn’t matter if it’s high noon ’cause it’s 5 o’clock somewhere.
