See GREASE at the Kravis Center Oct 28

Taylor Hicks as Teen Angel

One of the most beloved musicals of all time, Grease, is coming to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach this November. Take your South Florida vacation on a trip into the past when the only things that mattered were the slick of your hair and the shine of your car.

You know Grease. Danny, Sandy, the T-Birds – the 2007 revival of the 1972 original features loads of stage originals mixed with all your film favorites. The young, energetic and critically-lauded cast delivers classics like “Summer Nights”, “Greased Lightnin’”, “You’re the One That I Want”, “Sandy” and “We Go Together”.

American Idol fans are in for a special treat. In the role of Teen Angel singing “Beauty School Dropout” is fifth-season winner Taylor Hicks. We’ll reserve cynical comments and just express our happiness that he’s still finding work.

The Kravis Center will feature eight performances from November 10 to November 15, evenings and matinees. Tickets run from $25 – $88. If you’ve never been to the Kravis, this is an excellent opportunity to check it out. Learn more.

Art in the Gardens at Midtown, Palm Beach Gardens Oct 26

A gorgeous art-strewn garden stroll in late November? In South Florida and the Palm Beaches, it’s for real. Escape from the oncoming winter to the tropical temperament of Singer Island, and highlight your stay with this unusual event. Experience Art in the Gardens.

Art in the Gardens

A sort of kick-off to February’s annual ArtiGras Festival, Art in the Gardens is just what it sounds like: a vivid garden-set outdoor gallery featuring works from over 75 local Palm Beach artists. Sip champagne and take in the numerous original pieces, or forego the ballyhoo, walk the gardens and than settle in for some spirited live music. Just like the art, all the stage performers are local and top-notch.

Art in the Gardens is free-to-enter, and parking is free as well. You pay only for concessions, which are provided by several popular local eateries, from casual to fine dining. The event will be held November 21-22, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. Learn more.

The festival takes place on PGA Boulevard in Midtown, Palm Beach Gardens. This glamorous neighborhood just north of West Palm Beach is rapidly becoming one of South Florida’s most desirable upscale neighborhoods. Here’s a great chance to explore the area and take in a fine festival.

Have fun!

Palm Beach Fall Festivals – Oktoberfest Oct 08

Dust off those beer steins and “tap” to the beat of polka because tonight’s all about the brats and brews.

Tonight at Cityplace in West Palm Beach, the kick-off starts for one of the largest German celebrations in the country. Join the German-American Club of the Palm Beaches for a polka-party just as it should be. Guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort will have direct access to the frontlines of fun.

oktoberfestFor two weekends, Oktoberfest will bring in many more imports into Lake Worth, Florida than normal. Envision Munich’s Oktoberfest on a much smaller scale and you’re prepared. If not, here’s a run down of what to plan for over the weekend.

Oktoberfest will run October 9 1 11, 2009 and October 16 – 18, 2009, rain or shine on ten acres of tummy tumbling and clog-kickin’ fun. While there will be plenty to do for adults and kids (of all ages) including kiddy carnival rides, arts and crafts, there’s a little more to the main showcase.

Authentic food and brews will be brought in and include: bratwurst, leberkase, German pastries, sauerkraut, potato salads and directly imported Original Hofbrau Bier from Munich.

Entertainment will include traditional folk dancing performances, booths by vendors and craftsmen, a specified ‘kids zone’, Biergarten, and the headliners? Two bands to conduct sing-alongs straight from Munich’s very own Oktoberfest.

Two more must-sees during this event are the Parade of Flags and the Beer-Tapping Ceremony. And should you show up for the festivities, you’ll have a chance to win a free trip from Miami to Germany from AirBerlin.

Palm Beach Things To Do – Art After Dark Jul 30

If you just so happen to be around Clematis Street in Palm Beach on the second Thursday of August, you’ve got a shot at double the fun than normal.

The Norton Museum of Art has been running an Art After Dark program that, conveniently enough, pairs up with Clematis by Night! The joint program is called “Hot Hop” for Palm Beach’s Hop Palm electric cars that’ll take you from the museum down to Centennial Square for further late night festivities.

The Art After Dark program features activities, art (surprise), live music, film screenings and refreshments.

The galleries themselves are open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. but the various activities they run, as well as the cash bar on site, will stay open until 9:00 p.m. Feel free to sip on something bubbly as you scour busts in sculpture sections, or peruse the paintings lining the walls. If neither are for you, creativity comes in all shapes, sizes and mediums so fear not, you may find your own inspiration!

Though the area is famed for some seriously fancy fashion and being the favorite of many deep-pocketed patrons, the museum’s admission won’t follow the trend.

Admission for adults is $8, 13 to 21 $3, and children under 12? Free, not unlike the concerts that will follow at Centennial Square.

August 13, 2009, themed “Off The Wall” will feature do-it-yourself artistry, a 30-minute gallery tour, Yoga with Therese Abair of Living Fit Today, as well as hip-hop, pop, top hits, and reggae music from DJ Rumble.

Read a detailed schedule here.

And if you get hunger pains, shoot ‘em down with a shot and a taco chaser at Rocco’s Tacos and Tequila, also on Clematis Street.

Palm Beach Events – 4th on Flagler 2009 Jul 01

One of the holidays that’s always a blast, no matter where you are in the continental U.S., is July 4th – Independence Day.

The quintessential American holiday, for any of you that aren’t “Yankee” readers, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 – did you know it wasn’t declared a legal holiday until 1941?

Another quirky fact for you – the American National Anthem the “Star-Spangled Banner” is set to the tune of an old English drinking song, “To Anacreon in Heaven”.

4th on flagler 2009And while things heat up here in Texas, festivities are firing up all over the nation for an all day (and sometimes all weekend) party-hardy for the nation’s freedom all those years ago. In particular, South Floridians in Palm Beach have the 4th on Flagler 2009 to look forward to, and it’s expected to be booming with a crowd as big as its fireworks display.

Some 100,000 people are expected to turn out to the area’s biggest party beneath the palms, which will stretch on Flagler Drive from Fern Street to Lakeview Avenue, as well as in Trinity Park.

Two stages will be set up for nightlong entertainment (including live performances and a DJ stage for those who brought their dancing shoes) and the lineup includes the national recording artist, Kevin Rudolf.

Fun won’t be hard to find, no matter your age. There’s a place set aside strictly for the kiddos and their entertainment and when it comes to fireworks? You won’t have to worry about height being an issue for a good spot to see the show – spend your Fourth of July with open ears, an open mind and wide eyes and what better way to do all three than for FREE?

While I’m roasting burgers, you beach buffs will be toasting twilight with the area’s biggest bash. Whether your idea of fun’s a cookout in the backyard and barbecue, or booming fireworks displays (without the city limits tickets), celebrate the holiday safely and be sure to take all precaution and preventative measures if you decide to set off your own set of sparks.

For more information on 4th on Flagler please visit the Web site.
Festivities will be taking place Saturday, July 4th, 2009 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for 9:00 p.m.

West Palm Beach Events – Sweet Corn Fiesta Apr 24

Food and fun, as I’ve said before, is in no short supply in West Palm Beach, but today I thought I’d mention something with a good “maize”ure of wacky. sweet corn fiesta 2009

The 6th Annual Sweet Corn Fiesta is on for this weekend Sunday, April 26th, 2009. Palm Beach County is the cream of the crop when it comes to sweet corn, boasting cultivation of 27,000 acres yearly – that’s some serious stalking.

What’s even sweeter is the option of strolling through Yesteryear Village, a historic collection of 20 restored buildings where actors in costumes intermingle on the streets. Handmade crafts are put up for sale and their makers include weavers, spinners, and candledippers that price tag their items post production, the likes of which is demonstrated to onlookers.

Fun for the family is as plentiful as the produce at this year’s fiesta. Children’s rides and activities are free with admission. Food, country music, and contests only add to the “cropload” of excitement to be found on the fiesta grounds – in particular, the Adult International Corn Eating Contest where you can challenge the 2008 Corn King.

Growing more corn than any country in the world, West Palm Beach’s fiesta for the most fruitful crop in the county is worth checking out and you can learn more about it here.

Drop in for the fun over food during your stay at Hilton Singer Island’s Oceanfront Resort and have a weekend we’re sure won’t be any bad kind’a corny.

Admission: Adults $7, Children (6-11) $4. Children 5 and under are admitted free of charge. Parking is free. For additional information call (561) 996-0343.
