Eras away from the state-of-the-art, modern day, hip and chic architectural styles, treat yourself to some historical happenings while honing your creativity.

The Armory Art Center is a not-for-profit community based arts education and exhibition center. Founded in 1986, it now stands and continues to grow as proof of the community’s drive and involvement in establishing a place for people to gather for art and appreciation.

More than a dozen state-of-the-art studios call the Armory their home, housed in a building modeled after the Art Deco Style (circa 1939). Over 100 courses are offered and nearly 3,000 students pass through the Center’s doors annually.

As West Palm Beach’s only community art center, the Armory instructs classes in:

  • Jewelry
  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Sculpture

Not only does the Center offer annual classes but they also host Master Workshop series when 25 artists from around the country are featured and draws at least 400 participants each season. Youth, too, can get in on the creativity. With a unique Summer Art Camp, kids get a chance to partake it studio art activities from kindergarten through high school.

In the spirit of the hoopla surrounding the last single digit date for the next 92 years, we here at homebase decided to do a little something special.

Why is 09/09/09 so significant you ask? Here’s a little trivia for you, even if seemingly meaningless to some.

If 9 is multiplied by any other number, from 2 to 9, the two digits of the answer will add up to nine. Example – 2 x 9 = 18. The numbers 1 + 8 = 9. September 9 is the 252nd day of the year (2 + 5 + 2 = 9). The date also falls on a Wednesday and both Wednesday and September have 9 letters.

The Tim Burton science fiction film “9″ comes out today, Wednesday the 9th. Hand-stitched robots battle for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. How many? You guessed it – nine.

Several hotels have been offering discounts for today’s date – rooms priced around $99.

Many couples are making good on today’s date, too – talk about an anniversary you could never forget. In some countries and cultures, it stands with greater significance than simply aiding memory. In major Chinese dialects, the word used for “nine” is similar in sound to that for “long-lasting”.

Palm Beach has gone to the dogs.

More literally than figuratively.

The Palm Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room has a legacy as long as the four-legged friends that frequently appear on the track.

In 1932, the Club brought greyhound racing and pari-mutuel wagering to Palm Beach County on Wednesday, February 17. Packed with people waiting to get their “paws” on bets, 4,000 attended the grand opening of this now premier entertainment complex some 77 years later.

Estimated to have turned 32 million patrons over the years, with wagers well over billions, greyhound racing has become Palm Beach’s #1 spectator sport.

The racing track isn’t the only thing to go barking mad over, either. The Kennel Club also offers a 60-table Poker room with regularly scheduled tournaments, as well as a vast array of dining choices.

As one of the oldest and most competitive racetracks in the country, the Palm Beach Kennel Club is elegant, expansive, and extraordinary. In my constant hunt for out of the norm, but not out of the way, fun under the sun for you Floridians and beach lovin’ bums, I often find places with as much character as the people who visit!

If you’re looking for something special in Palm Beach, I’ve got just the thing for you.

This “Jewel of Palm Beach” brings class and culture into the most delicious, flawless combination. The Mar-a-Lago Club is a priceless piece of history and ingenuity perfect for the elite with a particular taste for as much character as containment.

Though it has been renewed and revamped by Donald Trump, the Mar-a-Lago reaches into a history longer lasting than modern day embellishment. Trump purchased the property in 1985 and used it as a private residence for ten years, until 1995 at which point the club was established and opened to the public a variety of venues for enjoyment. Despite Trump’s glorification of his own name, the entirety of the estate serves to esteem the endeavors of its original owner and dreamer, Marjorie Merriweather Post (then Mrs. E. F. Hutton). Opened after four years of construction, in January 1927 was the product of years of searching and scouring for the prime position nestled between Lake Worth and the ocean.
