Ft. Lauderdale Things To Do – SassyBB’s Project Runway Aug 17

Ft. Lauderdale’s giving homemade fashion a serious showcase this week.

project runway sassybbWith their version of famous fashion competition, a pseudo-Project Runway will rock SassyBB this week.

Established by fashion merchandising professor, columnist, published author and tennis teacher, SassyBB has quite the character. A “design-your-own-purse” boutique it may be but they also tout teachings of beginner and advanced sewing classes.

Sew much for having to buy your fashion on Las Olas.

Jeans, dress shirts, purses, aprons, skirts, pj’s, curtains, pillows, and dresses are only some of the articles available for instruction. Nevermind those boutique buys with someone else’s label – now you can have your own!

If you’re around on August 20, 2009 at 7 p.m., you could enter into SassyBB’s own version of Project Runway. With a $20 entry fee for the style showdown, you’ll be paired into teams to create a “surprise” project. You’ll have only 2 hours to complete it and all levels of expertise are welcome.

Whether you want the choice of 14 different styles to “pick your purse” from, even down to the interior/exterior cloth, handles and closures, or to throttle the competition with your threading needle, look no further than Ft. Lauderdale.

SassyBB is located at:

939 NE 19th Ave
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

Ft Lauderdale Things To Do – Las Olas Boulevard Jul 23

For the summer, Florida’s got more than a few options for fun in and out of the sun – shopping’s always a ready and relatively popular choice. Vacation destination or just visiting for the weekend? Wine and dine, watch a movie or snatch a secret find inside one of the stylish “shopper’s paradise”.

Bourgeoisie and boutique shops tout smashing selections and all on a las olas boulevardconvenient, strollworthy thoroughfare.

Ft. Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard has to be a big favorite for fashion lovers and the curious, native or not. Resident or visitor, basic and boutique needs are served, and well, by the stretch of stores catering to all kinds of tastes.

Currently, the Movies Under the Stars! is the running event on the Boulevard every Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. Spread out a blanket and sprawl on the lawn to catch the flick while you nibble on Kilwins’ popcorn and ice cream. July 29th’s scheduled film is The Wizard of Oz – walk your own yellow brick road and grab Toto (or Fido) to get in on the fun.

Better yet, with your ticket stub you’re eligible for a 25% discount off the following restaurants:

  • Mangos
  • Tuscan Grill
  • Johhny V
  • Smith & Jones
  • Teal Bistro Americana

Chairs and coolers are not permitted – chairs available for a nominal fee.

Monthly events and boutique buys aren’t the only thing you can take part in on Las Olas – with their vast array of fine dining, you could grab a killer coffee, a cocktail, or a delicious dinner made by a celebrity chef. Regularly scheduled live entertainment (a particular favorite of mine) rejuvenates some as readily as the ten different massage and salon spas. Bask in a masque or belt out lyrics – your choice!

Whether you like watching art in motion (live music) or still, Las Olas has it all – art galleries and studios showcase artifacts, antiques, original sculptures and décor.

Find something to mount on your mantle or wear yourself, because if you thought you had variety at your hometown mall, Las Olas has mas!

Ft Lauderdale Dining – The Mai Kai Restaurant Jun 18

For those of you South Floridians, Ft. Lauderdale diners, and vacationers at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort – feel like getting away to the South Seas for some South Pacific fun?

It’s authentic, and right in your own back yard. If you’re thinking orchids, leis, ti leaves, tiki torches and dancers with hips you didn’t know could move that much, you’re on mark.

mai kai restaurantThe Mai Kai Restaurant is bonafied gem, combining exquisite cuisine and fascinating entertainment, all while introducing Polynesian culture on stage or tableside.

Cross the wooden plank bridge and enter paradise, complete with tiki torches, a thatch roof, all recreated to resemble an authentic Polynesian Village.

The Polynesian Revue, the team’s performance troupe of dancers and native Polynesian performers is an elaborate one – the owner and choreographer Mireille Thornton, a native Polynesian herself, began as one of the Revue’s original dancers in 1961 and is now part of the longest running Polynesian dance show in the United States.

With regular trips to Tahiti, New Zealand, Samoa, Aotearoa, and Hawaii Thornton is constantly reforming and redressing the dance show – even the costumes are hand made from painted tapa cloth, flowers, mother-of-pearl, feathers, abalone and small seashells.

Even as elaborate as the dance troupe is, the menu is equally as expansive in its ability – to cater to tastes, complex and comfortable. Only a few of the Mai Kai’s favorites include Lemongrass Pork Tenderloin, Fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Florida Grouper, Lobster Cantonese, ‘Oak Roasted’ Filet Mignon Madagascar, Indonesian Spiced Rack of Lamb, and the Hawaiian Orange Papaya Duck.

If you’re still needing more motivation to trip on over to this little paradise, there’s more: the before dinner, after dinner, and during dinner tropical drinks. Dreamed up by the restaurant’s resident “mixologist” the selection ranges from boutique wines for connoisseurs to frozen mixes blending fresh fruit and West Indies spices and syrups, rums, and coffees – all complete with a range of charming grog glasses and Mai Tai flutes.

The restaurant also offers elaborate private performances, be they for groups of 20 or even weddings and receptions, with demonstrations of authentic Hawaiian wedding dances and Samoan fire knife dances.

Packages vary depending on the day, with complete set menus as well as the option for drink packages – I’d encourage you to read the site yourself. It, too, is delightfully designed. Hulu on in with your honey or grab the kids, both are welcome and the experience is an absolute must.

Ft. Lauderdale Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District Jun 03

Now, I know my focus has been pretty centered on Singer Island and West Palm Beach more particularly than surrounding areas but this time, I’m dragging my focus (and yours) to a semi-local hotspot that’s worth your visit.

Ft. Lauderdale’s got some serious fun – and while I could give you an exhaustive list (loquacious as I am) I’ve got to save some for later! After all, I don’t want to set you up for disappointment trying to fit it all in ONE vacation – think of it as my gift to you. A continuous list of reasons to return.

With an array of establishments you can’t beat, there’s nothing you’ll miss when you’re walking Ft. Lauderdale’s Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District. Two miles of tropical foliage tipping their leaves to brickwork walkways have welcomed visitors from all over the country, and the globe.

The roots of the river reach into history as far as Indian Tribal legends of “New Water” springing up from nowhere, where Major William Lauderdale built a fort and gave the city its current name.

More fond of fancy baubles than you are history? Or maybe food? There’s both on the Riverwalk. With prime pickings available from specialty shops such as Daoud’s Fine Jewelry and Cartier, you can find something fabulous and glittering before sitting down to a delectable meal at any of the restaurants lining the water, only a few of which are the Fifteenth Street Fisheries for the freshest fare with a beer and the popular Shooters Waterfront Café on the Intracoastal Waterway for boating buffs and beach bums.

Even if you’re looking to leave the kids, or bring them along, there’s something for the family, too, with the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art or even Sunday Jazz Brunches every first Sunday of the month to mix music, food, and art vendors.

Find a favorite of your own in Ft. Lauderdale, and don’t forget to snag a “suite” deal at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort.

For more information and a full listing of upcoming events, please visit the Riverwalk A&E Web site.
