Plan your Trip – Peanut Island Dec 07

We know that Singer Island is all the island paradise you need, with miles of soft beach, scenic greenery and the inviting accommodations of Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort. But we also know that some guests like to see it all.

If that’s you, then your Singer Island vacation isn’t complete without a visit to Peanut Island in the Intracoastal Waterway. This charming 79-acre island is not technically manmade, although it wouldn’t exist in its current form without human interference. Dredging projects starting as far back as the 1930s slowly revealed this coastal beauty in what is now called the Lake Worth Inlet. However, it wasn’t until 2005 that Peanut Island was renovated to serve as a public park and campgrounds.

Peanut Island

Make a day of it a Peanut Island. The park offers year-round boating (it’s a must for you sailors), fishing (24 hours a day, in fact), and sublime swimming and snorkeling. During the season, Memorial Day to the first local school day in August, swimming and snorkeling lagoons are lifeguarded daily. During the off-season, lifeguards are on duty weekends only, but the areas remain open sunrise to sunset.

If you’re not so aquatically inclined, there’s plenty of sightseeing all around the island, with breathtaking views from the 280-foot reef boardwalk. Cameras wanted!

Here’s maybe my favorite part. Adding to the island getaway appeal, Peanut Island is accessible only by watercraft. No inbound roads whatsoever. If you plan to take advantage of the fine boating facilities throughout the island, you’re all set. But if you left your yacht back at the house, no worries. There’s a simple, fun way to get to Peanut Island.

The Palm Beach Water Taxi, which we’ve mentioned before, provides daily shuttle to Peanut Island for only $10 per person. We don’t even think of it as transportation. No island excursion is complete with a coastal cruise, so we absolutely think of it as part of the experience. The Water Taxi leaves out of Sailfish Marina, learn more.

Again, I’m not sure you could get tired of the vibrant scenery just steps from the Hilton Singer Island Resort. But if you’re looking to mix it up on your Palm Beach vacation, you can’t go wrong with a daytrip to always pleasant Peanut Island.

Have fun!

Outdoor Fun at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Dec 04

There are portions of the Florida Everglades that rival even the South American rainforests for sheer ecological wealth. Literally thousands of species of animal and plant, many endangered, live exclusively within these narrowing wetlands. You may think of the Everglades as a far southern Florida attraction only, but in fact the northern hump of the preserve is just 30 miles away.

This protected region is known as the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, and it makes for refreshing and fascinating daytrips from Singer Island and the Palm Beaches.

Alligator

The sprawling 143,874-acre refuge is composed primarily of natural Florida marsh, though visitors will find a breathtaking cypress strewn swamp and dry patches as well. While most of the refuge is not actually open to the public (it is a depleting reserve, after all), what has been opened offers activities aplenty. Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless entertainment:

  • Sightseeing trails
  • Visitor center
  • Observation tower
  • Wildlife observation / bird watching
  • Photography
  • Canoe trail / kayaking
  • Sport fishing
  • Waterfowl hunting
  • Bicycling
  • Ecological tours

The refuge is best known for the abundance of American alligators, especially along the canoe trail, and also the remarkable diversity of birdlife. Several types of heron and egret, wood storks, and wading birds are a common sight, but not all are free to hunt. Consult waterfowl hunting rules carefully.

The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset, though various attractions may be either season or closed for various park reasons. The refuge may also be closed for inclement weather. There is a $5 per vehicle entrance fee, but know that vehicle movement around the refuge is severely limited. Learn more.

South Florida isn’t all beautiful beaches, though Singer Island may have you thinking otherwise. Take this chance to explore the vibrant ecology of South Florida.

Ragtops Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida Nov 16

Maybe the only thing more beautiful than a golden sunrise peaking up over the horizon off the Singer Island coast is the sparkle off the hood of a freshly waxed ‘58 Corvette. Chrome grill, 283-horse fuel-injection V-8, cherry red leather matching the paint – you can find this beaut and countless other gems at the Museum of Ragtop Motorcars in West Palm Beach, Florida.

At first a specialty dealership for vintage rides and the enthusiasts who love them, the Ragtops Museum has grown enormously since 1980 to encompass three buildings and two city blocks with event facilities, nostalgic dining entertainment and, of course, a museum of classic cars spanning stretching as far back as the 1930s.

Corvette

The collection is simply stunning:

1936 Chrysler Airstream Convertible Sedan
1938 Oldsmobile Sedan
1940 LaSalle Series 50 Sedan
1946 Chevrolet Pickup Street Rod
1950 Ford Hot Rod Woody Station Wagon
1961 Jaguar XKE Roadster
1962 Chrysler 300 H Hardtop Coupe
1964 Buick Skylark Convertible
1965 Willys Gala Surrey Jeep
1966 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible
1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible

And so many, many more (are a lost of these vehicles are for sale, too!)

The Ragtop Motorcars Museum also features a soda bar, recreation of a classic drive-in theatre, and two rentable events venues fashioned after the 1920s or the 1950s.

The museum is open for public viewing Wednesday through Saturday, by appointment Monday and Tuesday, and is always closed on Sunday. Suggested admission (by donation) is $5. Learn more.

CityPlace Tree Lighting – Holiday Events in West Palm Beach Nov 11

Tree

CityPlace in West Palm Beach is a fabulous destination for sights and shopping at any time of year. The Old World-inspired architecture, airy décor and selection of upscale shops and dining invites many a fine evening or afternoon of relaxation and light-hearted fun.

However, in just a few days, CityPlace will become so much more magical. Drop by the evening of Saturday, November 14 for the official holiday kick-off and CityPlace Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The scenic outdoor mall will be alive with holiday fervor as visitors pile around the massive 40′ tree in eager anticipation. Stilted acrobats will roam the crowd, performing tricks and dazzling guests as they build up to the big illumination. Drop in early that afternoon to grab a parking space, do a little shopping and then find a great vantage point.

When it’s finally 6:00 p.m., officials will light the great tree to the cheers of the crowd, followed by the season’s first snowfall. That’s right, snowfall. During the season, it “snows” every day at CityPlace, but don’t worry, you won’t need a coat.

Final Pursuit Charters – Deep Sea and Sport Fishing in Florida Nov 06

Fishing, one the oldest struggles of man versus nature. An able fisherman uses a fierce combination of technology, practiced know-how and unbreakable will to land that tale-making catch. Only with a concerted effort can one achieve over the briny depths.

Fortunately for you, at Final Pursuit Charters in Riviera Beach they take care of the first two. All you have to bring is the passion.

Final Pursuit

Final Pursuit Charters is a high-end, private fishing charter company specializing in the big catch. Captain Ed Suker takes parties no larger than six out into the coastal Atlantic in search of Blackfin Tuna, Dolphin (Mahi Mahi), massive Sailfish, Shark, Kingfish and the prize of all prizes, the Swordfish. And he gets the results! Monster catches, up to 25 lbs. even, are a fairly regular sight. Check some photos.

You’ll load up onto the Final Pursuit at Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach. She’s a beauty, equipped to the nines for a full and successful day of Florida sport fishing. Twin Evinrude E-tec 200HO engines get you out to the fishing waters fast, and a full StrataGlass enclosure keeps you away from the nastier elements. On-site, a hi-tech Fishfinder weeds out some of the guess work, but really it’s Captain Ed’s years of practice that’ll have the fish nipping in no time.

Half-day offshore fishing charters will run you $400 and include tackle, bait, bottled water and soda. Full-day charters bump up to $700 and include lunch as well. For the truly game, Swordfishing trips present the most challenging (and rewarding) experience at $800 for a full day (or night). $50 charge for each person over 4, to a max of 6. Custom cruises are also available.

If you want to catch fish, Final Pursuit Charters out of Riviera Beach is the place to go. Learn more about it here.

Florida Golf Vacations – Palm Beach Gardens Golf Course Nov 04

While most of the country has already started pulling out the heavy sweaters, South Florida is warm, bright and perfect for a gratifying game on the green. On your next South Florida vacation to the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort, bring along your clubs for a round or two at Palm Beach Gardens Golf Course.

Golf Course

This scenic par-72 in the upscale destination of Palm Beach Gardens was designed by local course maestro Roy Case, who owns and designs for Case Golf Company right here in West Palm Beach. His work has garnered awards and prestigious rankings all up and down the east coast, but we must say this is one of his best.

Palm Beach Gardens Golf Course offers the affordability of a municipal course (which it is), but the quality and organic spirit of a private resort. For over 6,500 yards, the course winds its way through natural preserved Florida wetlands, one of only a select few Florida golf courses to do so. Marshlands, palm trees and beautiful southern pines nestle the fairways for a fresh, tranquil atmosphere.

The course is challenging, but not so as to ward off casual and novice players. Well-defined elevation changes and smooth lines prove favorable to every level of golfer, and the price is certainly right for brining along sons and daughters wanting to get into the game. Four sets of tees help, too.

The Palm Beach Gardens Golf Course is open daily. Rates vary from $31-$44 depending on time of day and your residence status. Practice facilities, driving range and club house on-site. Learn more.

Stay at the Hilton Singer Island Hotel on your next Florida golf vacation. From golf packages to delightful dining, your enjoyment is our only priority.

Singer Island Scuba Diving by Force-E Oct 30

Scuba diving has always struck me as a funny pastime. I think it’s because it’s the only pastime I know that celebrates ship wrecks. They love them! The Force-E Web site I’m talking about today refers to their ship wrecks as “spectacular” and says that West Palm Beach is “famous for wrecks”. Just funny, I guess, out of context.

Anyways, it’s not about what I think. It’s about how much you love to scuba dive. If you love it a lot, West Palm Beach is the place for you. (And even if you don’t, this place might change your mind.)

Scuba Diver

Force-E South Florida Dive Centers offers terrific dive boats and excursions up a fair portion of the Florida coast, from Riviera to Fort Lauderdale. Right now, we’re only interested in West Palm Beach, a perfect spot to take a long dip under the ocean surface in search of life, gorgeous geography and, you guessed it, ship wrecks!

West Palm Beach excursions leave out of Riviera Beach Marina, just a quick drive from the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort, free parking available. There are a couple of excursions available.

Reef diving excursions will take you to the Lake Worth Inlet and Palm Beach Reef. The beautiful formation, built of modern living coral atop ancient dormant coral, teems with life and is virtually current-less. Less experience divers always appreciate the opportunity for such a leisurely dive that is still so full of color and wonder.

Wreck diving is very popular, despite the fact that the ship aren’t true wrecks. They are cleaned and purposefully sunk ships. Regardless, the life and sights that these haunting aquatic hollows create deserve every minute you can muster. No matter what site you choose, you’re in for an incredible dive.

Most charters feature two dives at different locations for about $65 a person (half-day). You can view the different boats on the Web site. Amenities may vary. Learn more.

Equipment rentals, training and certifications are also offered.

Enjoy an awe-striking afternoon under the sea, then return to the Hilton Singer Island for a relaxing evening. Have fun!

Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds Oct 21

With miles of pristine beach and sublime weather almost every day, it’s easy to forget the South Florida and the Palm Beaches deliver plenty of seasonal fun. And right now, it’s our favorite season!

Highlight the holiday by checking out all the spooks and kooks at Fright Nights, hosted at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach. Something like five or six attractions in one, Fright Nights welcomes the whole family with three adult-oriented haunted houses, multiple scare zones, side attractions and the kid-friendly Spookyville.

The non-wusses should head straight for the haunts. All three houses deliver creepily fascinating atmosphere and a few gruesome moments to go with. “Next of Kin” is a The Hills Have Eyes-style nightmare set in a town ravaged by a family of mutants. Our favorite, “Origins”, takes you on a disturbing journey into the life history of a serial killer. This is the only haunt I’ve ever seen tackle the subject from this angle. Very cool.

For the kids, Spookyville offers a frightless, Halloween themed village packed with games, rides, craft stations and plenty of trick or treating. Families and costumes welcome.

Both attractions are connected to the carnival midway featuring classic carnival rides and games (separate cost, depending on tickets).

Fright Nights runs for six more nights, tomorrow Thursday through Saturday, and then again next week Thursday to Saturday. You can do all the houses once for $15, or purchase up to the $25 wristband and do all the houses once then head to the midway for unlimited rides. Your call. Learn more.

Visit the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, Florida Oct 19

The far southern tip of Florida is known for astonishing houses. All along the coast you’ll find horizon-blotting sanctuaries to the rich and famous (well, rich at least), and it’s well worth a sightseeing cruise just to see them all. However, just a little bit up the eastern coast – and much closer to the Hilton Singer Island Resort – you’ll find a house even more spectacular: Whitehall, the Henry Flagler Museum.

Whitehall, The Henry Flagler Museum

The moment you see it – from the majestic white columns to the charming villa-style roof – you’ll know why this stunning 55-room mansion is more than just another house. Built by oilman, Rockefeller partner and Palm Beach founder Henry Flagler in 1900, the mansion is a marvel still to this day. Since being reestablished as a museum in 1960, Whitehall has been dutifully restored to its prosperous beginnings and seems today more magnificent than ever.

Visitors to the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, Florida enjoy first and foremost the house itself. Simply walking the rooms enwraps each guest in a sense of wonderment. However, Whitehall today is also a working museum featuring unique temporary art, textile and sculpture exhibits along with select pieces from Henry Flagler’s private collection. Temporary exhibits can also have a more historical bent, focused on what Mark Twain called America’s Gilded Age and also the history of Florida.

Opened in 2005 as the first architectural addition in 80 years, the adjacent Flagler Kenan Pavilion most notably houses Flagler’s private railway car. A must-see for any visit.

The Henry Flagler Museum is closed Mondays and some holidays. Guests are free to enjoy a self-guided tour, audio tour or even a docent-led tour (hosted twice daily). General adult admission is $18. Learn more.

Whitehall, the Henry Flagler Museum, is located only eight miles from Hilton Singer Island Resort. Get directions here.

Enjoy your time!

Florida Attractions – Crystal River Archaeological Site Oct 01

While it’s not something you’d stick at the top of your bucket list, this place has got somethin’ powerful by way of history and backstory.

It’s no hoppin’ club or bourgeoisie restaurant – it’s something sacred, and a little spooky in time for the fall holiday.

The Crystal River Archaeological Site, registered as the Crystal River Indian Mounds, this U.S. National Historical Landmark (designated September 29, 1970) is located on the Crystal River inside the Crystal River Preserve State Park. While there are all sorts of recreational activities you can get into, such as fresh water fishing, bird watching and boat tours, the real draw is the site itself.

If you’re not up for spooky stuff yourself, you’re welcome to tour the visitor center/museum which houses video of the Indian tribes that once inhabited the area, as well as a collection of various arrowheads, pottery, jewelry, and tools made from stone and bone.

Now, it might sound as if there are horror stories associated with this place but there aren’t. Given the fact All Saints Day/Halloween is on the approach, the fact that the Indian tribes used the site as a burial place, sometimes traveling great distances in order to partake in these sacred ceremonies and trading.

In addition to the burial mounds, the site contains a temple and platform mounds, each of which are circled by a half-mile, paved loop trail that passes by each mound, lined with signs to interpret each for viewers.

The crowning jewel is a 55 step observatory deck topping the park’s most sizeable mound, Temple Mound, allowing visitors a panoramic view.

Part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and containing coastal marsh, this seemingly simple site has plenty to offer by way of an alternative culture.
