Plan your Trip – Peanut Island Dec 07

We know that Singer Island is all the island paradise you need, with miles of soft beach, scenic greenery and the inviting accommodations of Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort. But we also know that some guests like to see it all.

If that’s you, then your Singer Island vacation isn’t complete without a visit to Peanut Island in the Intracoastal Waterway. This charming 79-acre island is not technically manmade, although it wouldn’t exist in its current form without human interference. Dredging projects starting as far back as the 1930s slowly revealed this coastal beauty in what is now called the Lake Worth Inlet. However, it wasn’t until 2005 that Peanut Island was renovated to serve as a public park and campgrounds.

Peanut Island

Make a day of it a Peanut Island. The park offers year-round boating (it’s a must for you sailors), fishing (24 hours a day, in fact), and sublime swimming and snorkeling. During the season, Memorial Day to the first local school day in August, swimming and snorkeling lagoons are lifeguarded daily. During the off-season, lifeguards are on duty weekends only, but the areas remain open sunrise to sunset.

If you’re not so aquatically inclined, there’s plenty of sightseeing all around the island, with breathtaking views from the 280-foot reef boardwalk. Cameras wanted!

Here’s maybe my favorite part. Adding to the island getaway appeal, Peanut Island is accessible only by watercraft. No inbound roads whatsoever. If you plan to take advantage of the fine boating facilities throughout the island, you’re all set. But if you left your yacht back at the house, no worries. There’s a simple, fun way to get to Peanut Island.

The Palm Beach Water Taxi, which we’ve mentioned before, provides daily shuttle to Peanut Island for only $10 per person. We don’t even think of it as transportation. No island excursion is complete with a coastal cruise, so we absolutely think of it as part of the experience. The Water Taxi leaves out of Sailfish Marina, learn more.

Again, I’m not sure you could get tired of the vibrant scenery just steps from the Hilton Singer Island Resort. But if you’re looking to mix it up on your Palm Beach vacation, you can’t go wrong with a daytrip to always pleasant Peanut Island.

Have fun!

Outdoor Fun at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge Dec 04

There are portions of the Florida Everglades that rival even the South American rainforests for sheer ecological wealth. Literally thousands of species of animal and plant, many endangered, live exclusively within these narrowing wetlands. You may think of the Everglades as a far southern Florida attraction only, but in fact the northern hump of the preserve is just 30 miles away.

This protected region is known as the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, and it makes for refreshing and fascinating daytrips from Singer Island and the Palm Beaches.

Alligator

The sprawling 143,874-acre refuge is composed primarily of natural Florida marsh, though visitors will find a breathtaking cypress strewn swamp and dry patches as well. While most of the refuge is not actually open to the public (it is a depleting reserve, after all), what has been opened offers activities aplenty. Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless entertainment:

  • Sightseeing trails
  • Visitor center
  • Observation tower
  • Wildlife observation / bird watching
  • Photography
  • Canoe trail / kayaking
  • Sport fishing
  • Waterfowl hunting
  • Bicycling
  • Ecological tours

The refuge is best known for the abundance of American alligators, especially along the canoe trail, and also the remarkable diversity of birdlife. Several types of heron and egret, wood storks, and wading birds are a common sight, but not all are free to hunt. Consult waterfowl hunting rules carefully.

The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is open daily from sunrise to sunset, though various attractions may be either season or closed for various park reasons. The refuge may also be closed for inclement weather. There is a $5 per vehicle entrance fee, but know that vehicle movement around the refuge is severely limited. Learn more.

South Florida isn’t all beautiful beaches, though Singer Island may have you thinking otherwise. Take this chance to explore the vibrant ecology of South Florida.

2010 Spring Training in Florida – Marlins and Cardinals Dec 02

Forgive me for jumping a bit ahead, but you can never act too soon when it comes to planning your trip for 2010 MLB Spring Training in Florida. The fifteen teams of the Grapefruit League will head into Central and South Florida in late February to start gearing up for another great season, and there’s no better place to stay than right here in Singer Island and the Palm Beaches.

Just a few miles out from the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort you’ll find Roger Dean Stadium, Spring Training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and the state’s own Florida Marlins. The beautiful stadium, unusual in more ways than one, seats up to 7,000 energetic baseball fans, and believe it or not they can fill every one of them for the exhibition matches, so don’t slouch on grabbing those tickets.

2010 Spring Training in Florida

There’s certainly plenty of thrill watching a classic franchise like St. Louis take to the field at the start of a fresh season – a current of excitement still reverberates from their 2006 World Series championship. However, at Roger Dean Stadium it’s really all about the local love. How awesome to have our own Florida Marlins training so close by!

They may be young, but with World Series wins in ‘97 and ‘03, they’re already a force to be reckoned with. Come see the Florida Marlins Spring Training at Roger Dean Stadium in 2010.

About that stadium. If you’ve never been to Roger Dean, you’re missing out. When Roger Dean Stadium opened in 1998, it sent a message to all those mega-developers putting up gaudy theme parks all over the east coast. No wraparound concourse, no faux-authentic décor, no needless techno-babble. Roger Dean Stadium is a true-blue, old-fashioned baseball park with great sight lines and no distractions. Simply, it gets to the spirit of the game, and we think it’s one of the best Grapefruit League baseball parks (if not the best).

2010 Spring Training at Roger Dean Stadium starts on March 3, 2010 and runs roughly ’til April 3. Between the Marlins and the Cards, there’s a game at Roger Dean almost every day. Learn more and buy tickets at the stadium Web site.

You can also get more general Grapefruit League Spring Training info here.

Roger Dean Stadium is located in Jupiter, Florida, an easy drive from the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort. Enjoy a great afternoon at the park, then return to Hilton Singer Island Hotel for relaxing evenings on the beach. Now that’s a vacation!

Havana – Best Restaurants in West Palm Beach, FL Nov 23

West Palm Beach residents and travelers alike aren’t looking for style over substance. It’s not all about a pretty place to be seen. According to voters on TripAdvisor, the best restaurants in West Palm Beach, Florida aren’t super-trendy molecular gastronomic cafés serving $50 foie gras or pompous beef castles. The best restaurants are the little joints serving authentic food with a side of personality, all at a fair price.

The top-voted restaurants include a local art pub, a sweet little Thai place, and my personal favorite, Havana, a Cuban paradise in the heart of West Palm Beach.

When you think Cuban cuisine, you might stop at the classic Hangover Helper, the Cuban sandwich, and for sure Havana makes a good one. But Cuban cuisine is so much more than a greasy sandwich. Spanish and African staples have melded with Caribbean and even Chinese influences to create a fragrant, succulent and often surprising cuisine, rich with spice and earthy satisfaction.

Havana Restaurant in West Palm Beach, FL

Havana is nothing if not crowd-pleasing. Safe, more “Americanized” tastes dot the menu for the less adventurous, with these preparations given just as much love as the more authentic entrees and sides. Still, I urge you head towards the gamier side of the menu.

Don’t miss the Masitas de Puerco Fritas, tender chunks of top quality pork marinated in garlic and deep-fried. A real “Wow” of a dish. The Pargo Entero Frito is another fried masterpiece, a whole snapper well-seasoned and deep-fried, topped with spicy onions.

Whatever you get, make room for one of several delicious plantain preparations. They serve them slice and deep-fried, sweet or starchy. The Tostones Con Mojo, green plantains in mojo sauce, are probably my favorite.

It would also be a crime to leave out dessert. I’m partial to the flan, served impossibly creamy with just a hint of snap (I get mine with coconut), but without a doubt the crowd favorite has been and will continue to be the Tres Leches cake. The Havana version is super-simple, no uppity presentation here, but the flavor is what counts in this ultra-rich dessert.

Are you ready for something really cool? Havana is open 24-hours a day. Sort of. The dining room runs regular lunch and dinner hours, but the restaurant operates a walk-up window 24/7. That means you can get sensational Cuban-style tamales when you need them most: three o’clock in the morning. The window doesn’t serve the entire menu, but they’re plenty of items available perfect for late night. Love this!

Havana Restaurant is located at 6801 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach, FL, 3405 and is open daily. View menu and more here.

It’s just not a trip to West Palm Beach without an authentic Cuban meal at Havana. Don’t miss it the next time you stay at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort near West Palm Beach, Florida.

Lilly Pulitzer Fashion Show at Palm Beach Gardens Mall Nov 18

Lilly Pulitzer (the dress, not the person)

Save the animals, and look a little fabulous doing it, this December 3rd at the Palm Beach Gardens Mall. Starting at 6:00 p.m., the Bloomingdale’s will host a catered cocktail party and Lilly Pulitzer Fashion Show featuring a collection from Pulitzer’s latest line, “Escape to the Water’s Edge”.

Although Lilly retired from all but consulting roles in 1984, her spirited, colorful clothing continues to gather new fans every year. Guests of the show will have the opportunity to meet Lilly Pulitzer President James Bradbeer, Design Director Jane Schoenborn and Ladies’ Designer Mira Jarvinen, as well as animal ambassadors from the Palm Beach Zoo.

Why? Because 10% of all Lilly Pulitzer sales made during the event will be donated to the Palm Beach Zoo. A chic new outfit for you and a good deed done for a great zoo, there’s so many reason to check this one out!

The Lilly Pulitzer Fashion Show will be held in the Bloomingdale’s at Palm Beach Gardens Mall starting at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 3. You can learn a little more about it here.

Ragtops Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida Nov 16

Maybe the only thing more beautiful than a golden sunrise peaking up over the horizon off the Singer Island coast is the sparkle off the hood of a freshly waxed ‘58 Corvette. Chrome grill, 283-horse fuel-injection V-8, cherry red leather matching the paint – you can find this beaut and countless other gems at the Museum of Ragtop Motorcars in West Palm Beach, Florida.

At first a specialty dealership for vintage rides and the enthusiasts who love them, the Ragtops Museum has grown enormously since 1980 to encompass three buildings and two city blocks with event facilities, nostalgic dining entertainment and, of course, a museum of classic cars spanning stretching as far back as the 1930s.

Corvette

The collection is simply stunning:

1936 Chrysler Airstream Convertible Sedan
1938 Oldsmobile Sedan
1940 LaSalle Series 50 Sedan
1946 Chevrolet Pickup Street Rod
1950 Ford Hot Rod Woody Station Wagon
1961 Jaguar XKE Roadster
1962 Chrysler 300 H Hardtop Coupe
1964 Buick Skylark Convertible
1965 Willys Gala Surrey Jeep
1966 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible
1968 Shelby GT350 Convertible

And so many, many more (are a lost of these vehicles are for sale, too!)

The Ragtop Motorcars Museum also features a soda bar, recreation of a classic drive-in theatre, and two rentable events venues fashioned after the 1920s or the 1950s.

The museum is open for public viewing Wednesday through Saturday, by appointment Monday and Tuesday, and is always closed on Sunday. Suggested admission (by donation) is $5. Learn more.
