Palm Beach Fall Festivals – Oktoberfest Oct 08

Dust off those beer steins and “tap” to the beat of polka because tonight’s all about the brats and brews.

Tonight at Cityplace in West Palm Beach, the kick-off starts for one of the largest German celebrations in the country. Join the German-American Club of the Palm Beaches for a polka-party just as it should be. Guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort will have direct access to the frontlines of fun.

oktoberfestFor two weekends, Oktoberfest will bring in many more imports into Lake Worth, Florida than normal. Envision Munich’s Oktoberfest on a much smaller scale and you’re prepared. If not, here’s a run down of what to plan for over the weekend.

Oktoberfest will run October 9 1 11, 2009 and October 16 – 18, 2009, rain or shine on ten acres of tummy tumbling and clog-kickin’ fun. While there will be plenty to do for adults and kids (of all ages) including kiddy carnival rides, arts and crafts, there’s a little more to the main showcase.

Authentic food and brews will be brought in and include: bratwurst, leberkase, German pastries, sauerkraut, potato salads and directly imported Original Hofbrau Bier from Munich.

Entertainment will include traditional folk dancing performances, booths by vendors and craftsmen, a specified ‘kids zone’, Biergarten, and the headliners? Two bands to conduct sing-alongs straight from Munich’s very own Oktoberfest.

Two more must-sees during this event are the Parade of Flags and the Beer-Tapping Ceremony. And should you show up for the festivities, you’ll have a chance to win a free trip from Miami to Germany from AirBerlin.

South Florida Festivals – Biketoberfest 2009 Oct 07

Gentlemen and ladies, start your engines.

Haul out on your hogs. Break out the Big Dogs. Have it your way with your Harley.

From October 15 – 18, 2009 Daytona Beach will welcome back its award winning festival, Biketoberfest. Thousands of bikes will be rumbling as they roll into Daytona, and some of the finest will cruise the Daytona International Speedway.

The weekend will be booming with plenty of fun and food for all ages. Men and women who still like their toys big and loud will be in veritable “hog” heaven. Motorcycle “hogs”, not the curly tailed kind in case you needed clarification.

Top manufacturers will be offering demonstrations on some of their newest machines, shows and rallies will showcase both vintage and custom-made bikes and more action to come on the track itself.

In addition to all the “exhaust”ing excitement, live music will be served up as standard fare with endless amounts of food ripe for the feasting.

Different venues mean different activities, so plan on making it a weekend adventure. Or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, an extended weekend.

In addition to motorcycle shows, there’ll be a muscle car feature, a Gibson guitar give-away, a Hooters Bikini Contest and appearances from some big names. Drop in to see Charlie Daniels, or Vince Neil of Motley Crue.

We’re sure you won’t be short of things (or people) to see over the weekend and worth a visit for the experience alone, we hope to see you down in Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest. What better way to roll out Fall with a fierce festival like this one?

Florida Festivals – Central Florida Peanut Festival Oct 02

Looking for a Fall weekend festival?

Here’s something to go “nuts” over. Literally.

The 21st Annual Central Florida Fall Harvest & Peanut Festival will be held tomorrow, October 3, 2009 in Williston, Florida.

In Williston’s Linear Park, things are going to get a little nutty.

Expect plenty of thrill rides, stretches of craft booths to peruse, live music from local entertainers, and a special appearance by the Little Peanut royal family.

Entirely centered on the celebration of the area’s prized crop, there’s bound to be as many bags of the shelled specialties as crafts oriented in their honor. Your little ones can get in on the crunch time when it comes to the competition: at the festival, a Little Peanut King and Little Peanut Queen will be crowned. (Children ages 3 – 6 can compete in this competition. Infants and toddlers up to age 2 can compete for the Baby Peanut crown.)

Naturally, a feast of foods will be present for all patrons. However, you’re guaranteed to get your hands on some serious groundnuts. They’ll come roasted, boiled, fried and baked.

This family fun festival annually draws in excess of 9,000 people from Key West, Georgia, even Alabama. Benefiting the community, all proceeds are reinvested right into progress.

All you goobers, get on down to Williston (or up) to sample something Mr. Peanut would be proud of.

Florida Attractions – Crystal River Archaeological Site Oct 01

While it’s not something you’d stick at the top of your bucket list, this place has got somethin’ powerful by way of history and backstory.

It’s no hoppin’ club or bourgeoisie restaurant – it’s something sacred, and a little spooky in time for the fall holiday.

The Crystal River Archaeological Site, registered as the Crystal River Indian Mounds, this U.S. National Historical Landmark (designated September 29, 1970) is located on the Crystal River inside the Crystal River Preserve State Park. While there are all sorts of recreational activities you can get into, such as fresh water fishing, bird watching and boat tours, the real draw is the site itself.

If you’re not up for spooky stuff yourself, you’re welcome to tour the visitor center/museum which houses video of the Indian tribes that once inhabited the area, as well as a collection of various arrowheads, pottery, jewelry, and tools made from stone and bone.

Now, it might sound as if there are horror stories associated with this place but there aren’t. Given the fact All Saints Day/Halloween is on the approach, the fact that the Indian tribes used the site as a burial place, sometimes traveling great distances in order to partake in these sacred ceremonies and trading.

In addition to the burial mounds, the site contains a temple and platform mounds, each of which are circled by a half-mile, paved loop trail that passes by each mound, lined with signs to interpret each for viewers.

The crowning jewel is a 55 step observatory deck topping the park’s most sizeable mound, Temple Mound, allowing visitors a panoramic view.

Part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and containing coastal marsh, this seemingly simple site has plenty to offer by way of an alternative culture.

Singer Island, FL – McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary Sep 25

So you’ve snuck off to Singer Island for a weekend – or maybe even during your work week. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, there’s something special waiting to make you feel warm and fuzzy. With lots of.. warm and fuzzy.

Guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort will enjoy easy access and amply-appointed accommodations during their fun-in-the-sun sneakaway. After all, this safe haven’s only a mere 14 miles away.

Find directions to McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary here.

mccarthys wildlife sanctuaryMcCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary stands as a testament to a noble struggle of an endeavor. Sure, domestic pets may make caring for them a handful – but imagine 22 “cats” the size of ponies who consume over one thousand pounds of meat each week.

Supported mostly by volunteers and members, the Sanctuary maintains the rigorous rehabilitation of our wild friends, some more numerous than others, than can no longer provide for themselves. Predominantly donated by wildlife officers, these confiscated animals who have been neglected, abused, or illegally possessed have come under the care of a very loving and devoted hand.

Established by Mark McCarthy, who began as a reptile keeper in a venom research lab, the Wildlife Sanctuary this year has treated hundreds of native animals that were sick or injured. Patients and residents include: foxes, bobcats, Sandhill cranes, pelicans, hawks, owls, gators, African spur tortoises, spotted leopards, white tigers, Ruffed lemurs, kinkajous and more.

Most of the rehabilitated are released into the wild but the current 90 residents are either healing, or educating. Mark’s educational program has not only educated thousands of students and locals but has also generated a fair amount of interest from those with starpower, including Jack Hanna, Jane Goodall. His trusting residents, too, have appeared in thousands of videos, film and print ads, and TV shows.

16 years and still going strong, the Sanctuary looks to caring and the eager interested for support and relies on its community, speaking for those without a voice.

Private guided tours are available but by appointment only. Enjoy up close and personal encounters with the residents, the likes of which you’d rarely reach in a zoo or on a safari.

Ft Lauderdale Restaurants & Dining – Casa D’Angelo Sep 23

La dolce vita = steak dinners and fine wine.

Envision fresh buffalo mozzarella expertly layered with fresh basil and scattered, crisp cherry tomatoes – sounds like a dish only worth daring in “the Boot” old world, right?

Bellissimo, they say, in only rave reviews about Casa D’Angelo, a top-rated Tuscan-style restaurant whose flagship restaurant rests in Ft. Lauderdale aptly-named Sunrise Square. Although this place is stateside, it seems to have been transported quite literally from Florence.

Owner chef Angelo Elia conjures creative genius with only the finest ingredients and extraordinary dishes with a distinctive Florentine flair. In fact, he garnered most of his skills in his mother’s kitchen in – you guessed it – Florence, Italy.

Just about everything is made entirely from scratch and possesses an “old-country passion” in traditional Tuscan dishes. In fact, Casa D’Angelo was recognized by Zagat’s America’s Top Restaurants in only its first year of operation.

Having become one of “the places to dine” in South Florida, the Chef offers cuisine you should most certainly give a shot. The wine list (41 pages), neatly organized by region and extensive enough to require an index, provides an equally diverse variety as the menu.

Each dish is prepared with such attention to detail, Angelo’s craft extends to the very presentation of the meal. Tuscan entrees tangle with Southern Italian injections in a true test of creative culinary skill and ingenuity – one Chef Angelo Elia aces with practiced ease.

With constantly changing theme nights and super specials, twist and tango your way through your day to make some time to see some of Palm Beach’s liveliest crowd.

Miami Attractions – Jungle Island Sep 17

If you’re not up for seizing treasure and reliving the raging seas with your favorite swashbucklers.. would you fancy a trip to the tropics right in your back yard?

Jungle Island is a tropical haven for some of the most fantastic flyers – aviaries eat your heart out, half the residents of the exhibits come and go as they please.

The attraction is a living one teeming with wildlife to pitch wide-eyed wonder to any visitor, big or small, old or new. Undertaken by Austria native Franz Scherr who arrived in the U.S. in 1991, he was a carpenter by trade but a nature lover at heart.

By burrowing a nature trail into the coral rock and hammock land (20 acres of which he rented for $25 per year), he left the naturally growing flora undisturbed. One of the more unique tourist attractions, Jungle Island (formerly Parrot Jungle) is now home for 1,100 tropical birds, 2,000 different plants and flowers, and the most prestigious trained bird show in the world.

Although the free flying exotic birds are the original draw for visitors, Jungle Island features more for your nature appreciating entertainment. Ligers, the result of breeding a male lion and female tiger, are the largest cats in the world – and the largest calls Jungle Island home. Hercules, the resident Liger, stands at over 11” tall and weighs more than 900 lbs, touting the title of the largest cat on Earth by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Beyond the numerous chimpanzees, baboons, birds, alligators and other gnarly guests, Jungle Island has something special. La Playa is Jungle Island’s private beach – you’ll be able to enjoy Biscayne Bay under an umbrella on a chaise lounge with a “Playa Colada” after touring the place. It’s even kid-friendly, too. With a 17 foot slide, kids surf the saves and drop into a cool pool at the end. There’s even an obstacle course for the kiddos.

One Playa Colada for mom and dad, one frosty popsicle for the little one. Swing by and see some of your free and high flying friends, Hercules, and kick back all in the same day.
