South Florida Attractions – DeLeon Springs State Park Aug 28

Advertised as a fountain of youth, “impregnated with a deliciously healthy combination of soda and sulfur” – who wouldn’t be keen on visiting?

Touted as such in 1889, what is now known as the DeLeon Springs State Park has a healthy history of mystery and violence for such a seemingly serene place.

Just as much full of natural wonder today as it was then, the State Park has plenty to offer by way of things to do and appreciate. Outdoor recreation abounds in this historical place.

Whether you enjoy hiking through the lush landscape, or swimming the constant 72 degree spring waters on your way to the featured focus of the park, each experience promises to be as enjoyable as the next. Canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or walk to explore the 18,000 acres of lakes, creeks and marshes of nearby Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge.

Half the park’s fame comes from the 6,000 year-old dugout canoe that was discovered here and stands as arguably one of the oldest ever found in America. As Florida traded hands from the Spanish to the English, Seminole Indians were settling in on the grounds. After European goods traded for Indian furs and deerskins, Spain seized its ownership and turned the land into plantation grounds known as Spring Garden.

After Florida became U.S. territory in 1821, Colonel Orlando Rees employed an ingenious waterwheel using the flow of the spring to grind his sugarcane from the plantation. During the Second Seminole War (1835-42), the plantation suffered from a severe sacking but was later reclaimed in 1838 by General Zachary Taylor.

The Second Seminole War isn’t the only wartime experience the plantation has suffered through, either. During the Civil War, the mill was used to grind the grain for the Confederate and other stores. Later captured by Union soldiers, most of the facilities were destroyed.

The very mill that suffered so much is the same one that now draws on favoritism from many tourists and travelers. The Old Spanish Sugar Mill and Griddle House offers their own sort of specialty, most peculiar in a State Park. Grain, stone ground by French buhr millstones, provide the very basis of what turns out to be some of the most phenomenal pancakes made at your own table, complete with a griddle. The restaurant serves breakfast all day and offers salads and sandwiches for the crew who isn’t so fond of foods after the a.m.

Orlando Attractions – Aquatica Water Park Aug 27

As the summer is winding down, it doesn’t have to mean your fun has to be watered down.

But it could.

“Serene to extreme” are attractions featured at Aquatica Water Park, one of the three marine adventure parks found nowhere else.

The park is comprised of 60 acres of finely landscaped, South Sea Islands imitation – echoes of the rugged beauty and charm of Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand are apparent almost immediately. Lush flowers, winding blue waters, waterfalls and rocky outcrops provide an almost surreal paradise.

36 of the world’s most exciting water rides rest in this very park. So do six rivers and lagoons, as well as 80,000 square feet of beach front. If the rides themselves don’t thrill you, the personalities of the animals who call this park home will.

Some of our favorites are:

  • Dolphin Plunge
The park’s signature attraction – plunge into 250 feet of clear chutes through crystal clear lagoons where the Commerson’s Dolphins play.
  • Big Surf Shores & Cutback Cove
These side-by-side wave pools are the only pair in the world capable of operating together, or independently. Enjoy five foot swells or gentle surf.
  • Loggerhead Lane
Relax as you wind about underwater through the habitats of the Commerson’s Dolphins, exotic birds and an 10,000-gallon tank of exotic fish.
  • Tassie Twister
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a twirl on this 129-foot flume that turns into a spinning superbowl before you drop into Loggerhead Lane.

Even if, for whatever reason, you may give the thrill rides a wide berth, there are still plenty of things to keep you entertained. Serene rivers will carry you throughout the park, while the beach provides plenty of play room, shade and sandy stretches. Personal cabanas are also available along the shoreline. Bring an appetite, too, as there is a vast array of dining options in the park.

Hours vary, so be sure to check with the park before you venture out. Visit the site here or call 1-888-800-5447.

Palm Beach Attractions – Palm Beach Kennel Club Aug 25

Palm Beach has gone to the dogs.

More literally than figuratively.

But guests of the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort and South Floridians, never fear.

The Palm Beach Kennel Club & Poker Room has a legacy as long as the four-legged friends that frequently appear on the track.

In 1932, the Club brought greyhound racing and pari-mutuel wagering to Palm Beach County on Wednesday, February 17. Packed with people waiting to get their “paws” on bets, 4,000 attended the grand opening of this now premier entertainment complex some 77 years later.

Estimated to have turned 32 million patrons over the years, with wagers well over billions, greyhound racing has become Palm Beach’s #1 spectator sport.

The racing track isn’t the only thing to go barking mad over, either. The Kennel Club also offers a 60-table Poker room with regularly scheduled tournaments, as well as a vast array of dining choices.

As one of the oldest and most competitive racetracks in the country, the Palm Beach Kennel Club is elegant, expansive, and extraordinary. While it’s nothing like a stroll on Clematis, it gives some the same thrill as finding fashion. Fascination comes in all kinds and the Palm Beach Kennel Club is something to see – whether you’re betting on pooches or playing cards.

Palm Beach Nightlife – Panama Hattie’s Aug 21

When the sun goes down on Hilton Singer Island’s Oceanfront Resort, the party doesn’t end – it begins.

With Palm Beach Gardens a mere taxi trip away, you’ll literally have fun nipping at your heels night and day. Bask in the rays on the beach during the day and soak up the music and crowds at night.

Panama Hattie’s is just about Palm Beach’s most popular waterfront restaurant – keep in mind, there are many of these, so the competition’s steep. But with a wide array of offerings, Hattie’s has it covered.

Dinner, dunch, brunch, lunch – the possibilities are endless. Whenever the mood strikes you? They’re ready and waiting. You can’t beat sunset dinners on the Intracoastal Waterway and Hattie’s has plenty of front row seating for you and your somebody.

Even if you’re not up for some specialty seafood, you’ve got to drop in for the scene. With one of the best happy hours around, the Rum Bar rocks north Palm Beach. No cover, no guff and nothing but delicious drinks and live entertainment to keep you coming back for more.

Ship captain’s allowed for a night of reckless abandon and dropping in on the local water way meant booze, music and women. Or so the story goes for the foundation of South Florida’s tiki bars and the Rum Bar at, you guessed it, Panama Hattie’s.

Hats off to Hattie’s for a killer selection of booze and monstrous meals, no matter the time of day you get to craving.

Panama Hattie’s is located at:

11511 Ellison Wilson Rd
North Palm Beach
, FL 33408

Palm Beach Things To Do – A Latte Fun Indoor Playground & Cafe Aug 20

In my constant hunt for out of the norm, but not out of the way, fun under the sun for you Floridians and beach lovin’ bums, I often find places with as much character as the people who visit!

Today’s no different.

This one’ll make “A Latte Fun” for families and “a latte” difference, too.

Started by a mother of four who took a trip to find her sanity after the corporate world, and to spend time with her babies, it dawned on her.

She adored the little ones but came to a quick realization that: she and the kiddos needed to get out of the house and she didn’t have any place of her own to be equally happy as her kids. Different ages, different environments – different needs! The charm of this place and this story is evident in the sheer size of this dream turned reality.

4,000 square feet sprawled with carpet and playthings is her vision come to life – supervised play and pampering for the parents. It doesn’t get better than this, and whether you vacation or live in South Florida, it’s worth seeing for the sake of appreciating its ingenuity.

For the kids, there’s plenty to do:

  • Large inflated slide
  • Trampoline
  • Foam pit
  • Climbable lighthouse
  • Reading corner
  • Infant/Crawler area
  • Pretend Play area, with kitchen!
  • Market and Dress up
  • Building, riding, sorting, creating, play toys

And for the parents? Get this:

  • Coffee drinks
  • Healthy food options
  • Plush sofas and chairs
  • Wifi Internet
  • Mellow music
  • Supervised play for your children

So you can kick back and relax on your own or socialize with other parents (and finish your sentence) while your kids have a blast in a safe, and arguably creative environment. Socked feet are a must, so as to preserve a safe and clean environment for kids and grown ups.

Ft. Lauderdale Things To Do – SassyBB’s Project Runway Aug 17

Ft. Lauderdale’s giving homemade fashion a serious showcase this week.

project runway sassybbWith their version of famous fashion competition, a pseudo-Project Runway will rock SassyBB this week.

Established by fashion merchandising professor, columnist, published author and tennis teacher, SassyBB has quite the character. A “design-your-own-purse” boutique it may be but they also tout teachings of beginner and advanced sewing classes.

Sew much for having to buy your fashion on Las Olas.

Jeans, dress shirts, purses, aprons, skirts, pj’s, curtains, pillows, and dresses are only some of the articles available for instruction. Nevermind those boutique buys with someone else’s label – now you can have your own!

If you’re around on August 20, 2009 at 7 p.m., you could enter into SassyBB’s own version of Project Runway. With a $20 entry fee for the style showdown, you’ll be paired into teams to create a “surprise” project. You’ll have only 2 hours to complete it and all levels of expertise are welcome.

Whether you want the choice of 14 different styles to “pick your purse” from, even down to the interior/exterior cloth, handles and closures, or to throttle the competition with your threading needle, look no further than Ft. Lauderdale.

SassyBB is located at:

939 NE 19th Ave
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

West Palm Beach Dining – Pistache French Bistro Aug 10

Say au revoir to bland, boring foods and bonjour to a better feast!

And no, the selection isn’t the type to include “French” fries in its foreign flair.

The Pistache French Bistro plays matchmaker with French bistro goodies with a definitively Mediterranean style.

That’s right, Pistache has panache.

Better yet, guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort won’t have far to go for international fare – no airlines or bag checks involved.

Seating an intimate 200, the restaurant welcomes native and aspiring Parisians into its doors seven days a week for all kinds of courses. Poised on the waterfront at Clematis Street, it’s the perfect location to feel as close to France as Florida can create. French Riviera, eat your heart out. Oversized umbrellas shade up to 30 people out on the patio overlooking Centennial Park and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Simple dishes have surprising depth, all made from the freshest local and imported ingredients. Moderate prices make for a worthwhile trip to taste healthy recipes, delivered personably by efficient and smiling servers.

Even the interior has character equal to the wide variety of foods on the menu. Littered with red leather banquettes for your bum and a full bar for your tongue. Monstrous antique mirrors give the place a classic, retro-modern sophistication that speaks of a movement ever remembered from the 1920’s Art Nouveau.

The plates themselves are mouth-watering at the simplest description (see Beef Carpaccio with Arugula, shaved parmesan and a white truffle drizzle) and promise reason enough to dive headfirst into culinary heaven.

Brunch, lunch, or dinner, they’re all winners.

Palm Beach Things To Do – Kafee’s Garden Spa Aug 07

Quiet time, a thorough massage and pampering fit for royalty – no, it isn’t Mother’s Day or your birthday.

Some of the specials the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort is running are the cream of the crop for such a killer location. Does it get any better than a panoramic view of the deep blue outside your spacious suite?

You bet’cha.

With the Bed & Breakfast special, you and yours can lounge as you please. No need to get out of bed and dressed for decency in the dining room – you can feast without ever getting to your feet! If you decide to dare the Palm Beach nightlife, known to be quite the crazy crowd, you won’t have to worry about waking up late and missing the good grub.

kafee's garden spaIf you need to recover (and not from any harrowing hangover), Kafee’s Garden Spa is outfitted for your relaxation and rejuvenation. They, like the Oceanfront resort, have some great specials to choose from. The Couples Spa Getaway, however, is suited for two and simple serenity.

Read detailed spa and salon specials for Kafee’s here.

Begin your lazy day with an hour long massage from practiced, professional fingers with your sweetie at your side. If you’re like me and not a big fan of fluorescent lights when you’re stretched out for some much needed rest, then you’ll appreciate the candle light they work by.

After you’re loose and limber, you’re in for a real treat. For your feet. Following the massage is a one hour, side-by-side whirlpool pedicure. They’re really a pleasant pampering, even if you’re ungodly ticklish (true story).

Once you’ve touched up your toes and worked out the knots in your back, you’ll still find your personalized breakfast each morning of your stay. Or if you’re a bigger fan of facials and waxes, there are specials for those, too.

After you’ve indulged with some super spa treatment, find more fun and fashion only three minutes away while you stroll Clematis Street. There, too, you’ll find the nightlife you’re looking for to make the best of your breakfast in bed.
