Palm Beach Dining – Michael R. McCarty’s Jun 26

You might not expect a native New Yorker to forgo the boom and bustle of the city that never sleeps for one that’s full of beachfront bums and a gnarly night scene.

This one did.

Tropical breezes and swaying palms are quite the shift in scenery from a life lived in the Big Apple where commuters on foot can travel faster than four wheels, and it’s exactly what the Michael McCarty, owner of Michael R. McCarty’s Restaurant and Saloon, did.

The restaurant bearing his name has long become one of the few prestigious places to pop in and see in Palm Beach. An experienced restaurateur, it wasn’t until 2002 that McCarty purchased Dempsey’s to redesign, and redefine dining elegance and prestige by opening the restaurant after his own name.

It all started with his first visit with friends to Palm Beach in 1973 – so stricken by South Florida’s tropical beauty, he returned annually up until his purchase and opening of the restaurant.

Its traditional home-cooked dishes, friendly staff and healthy crowd of familiar regulars are world renowned. The outdoor terrace is a charming touch to an establishment comprised of British Colonial décor, with the beach breeze at your back and the moonlight night overhead. Unique to the restaurant, too, is “Rory’s” the restaurant’s bar and sitting room, covered in pink patent leather couches and cushioned chairs. Both the terrace and Rory’s are as available and prepared for romping regulars or the rental of private parties, be they for lunch, dinner, or solely celebration! See pictures and menus here.

Whether or not you’ve got a picky palette, there’s something to tickle your taste buds – even if you opt for a scrumptious soufflé or the freshest seafood and steak. Get yourself a rack of lamb, the Grilled Atlantic Salmon or if you’re after something from down home, try the Homemade Meatloaf. Or if you’ve got the need to sate your sweet tooth, Bread Pudding and Allie’s Cupcakes will serve you just as fine as the staff in a relaxed, refreshingly unique elegance that suits the Palm Beach people, visitors or native.

Pick a wicker seat and kick your feet up for some fun with friends, or make some new ones. Michael R. McCarty’s is open from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. serving brunch, lunch, and dinner. Drinks are served until 3:00 a.m.

Key West Attractions – Dry Tortugas National Park Jun 24

Now that summer’s in full swing, most of the kids (elementary and college) are out of school and screamin’ their celebration. While we’re baking here in our hometown, we’re hoping you’ll get a chance to sneak away from reality, if only briefly!

dry tortugas national parkIf the kids are coming along on one of the many steal-of-a-deals to Key West this summer, and even if they’re not, who doesn’t love a little bit of pirate lore and stories of sunken treasure? Grab the grog and get your “booty” down to Key West’s Dry Tortugas National Park.

Think history and harrowing tales all tied together.

Ponce de Leon discovered the Dry Tortugas in 1513, named for the lack of surface fresh water on the seven islands that comprise this national park. However, it was known to de Leon simply as the Tortugas, deriving its namesake for the abundant 160 sea turtles (Tortugas) caught during his discovery.

The islands were both favored for its prime position in the Florida Straits and feared for its shipwrecking reefs and shoals. This proved a militaristic advantage in the early 1800s, the massive coastal Fort Jefferson was begun in 1846 by order of Franklin Roosevelt, only to be left unfinished. Even incomplete, the fort still maintains its title in the Western Hemisphere as the largest masonry structure, comprised of 16 million bricks.

The vast amount of native wildlife that call the islands isn’t the only inviting characteristic of this now National Park, named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and a National Park in 1992. Known for its vibrant coral reefs, plentiful sea life, and legends of shipwrecks and treasure, the islands and fort are accessible only by chartered seaplane or boat.

Ferries leaving from Key West can cart you over to dally in de Leon’s stomping ground for snorkeling, camping, a picnic, scuba diving, saltwater fishing, guided wildlife watching and birdwatching. Something around 80,000 Sooty terns stop through from between February and September for their nesting season on the island – that’s as many as annual visitors to the National Park!

South Florida Fishing – Fishing Florida Jun 22

Wishing all our readers a happy start to another week, we hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend with your favorite father figure.

south florida fishingIn the same vein of fun with fathers, and for those of you who are fishing fanatics, Ft. Lauderdale’s only one of the many places Fishing Florida will take you land your next big catch.

In town for fun, corporate meetings, or visiting on vacation? Guests at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort, too, can enjoy a quick little getaway from the beach umbrellas and the crash of waves to something a little more serene. After you work Worth Avenue for fashion, fish for your own treasure.

The largest freshwater fishing guide service in Florida, Fishing Florida touts their specialty in Largemouth and Peacock Bass fishing. With an extensive list too long to list here, the vast array of lakes for you to find your own peaceful place and next wall mount isn’t the only draw for this snappy service. See a full list of lakes here.

Whether you’re experienced or still green behind the ears, the crew at Fishing Florida makes your fish hunt a fun and relaxing one.

Leave your checklists, your tackle, boating licenses and baits at home with the dog – you can bring your kids, your honey, or the boss for as much, or as little time as you like.

Year-round rates and scheduling start at two-hour trips for one or two people at $200 and extend to eight hours at $400. If you’re not content with the same place for your time, you’ve got options: variety trips involve 2, 3, and 5 day fishing excursions with a choice of 2, 3, and 5 different lakes respectively. These run from $700 – $1650.

There’s two top rated things that make this guide service suitable for any vacation, retreat, or family fun. Number one? All the necessary bait and tackle are provided, and we’re talking quality rods and reels, no cane poles or wrestling with minnows involved. Number two? They have a “No Fish No Pay” policy, so that if your hands turn up empty at the end of your trip, they won’t expect you to fill theirs. With as fickle as fish are, that’s a pretty big promise.

Fishing Florida’s Ft. Lauderdale is located at:

Retire Those Ties – 3 Unique Father’s Day Gifts Jun 19

Whether it’s Pops, Pa, Padre, Dad, Daddy, or “my old man” – no matter what you call him, his day’s right around the corner.

unique father's day giftsThat special day of tribute to fathers everywhere: Father’s Day. Luckily, there’s a variety of ways to ensure Dad’s special day is spent that way, even without high-end technology requiring seven instruction manuals or paisley sweaters and power tools.

Billy Cosby said, “Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.”

I’ve had my fair share of homemade gift giving to my pops, including crafty things of popsicle sticks, hand painted cards, or random knick knacks when that’s all my twelve year old self could afford. I’m sure ties and trinkets will touch padre’s heart but if you’re looking for something or some place a little different this year, read on.

Sockscription: Here’s my “feet”ured recommendation for this Father’s Day – if you haven’t heard about it, it’s worth the read and it’s good for Father’s Day, or any holiday, special occasion, or just for a practical joke, except it is practical! By purchasing a “sockscription” you have the option to choose the kind of high-quality Italian-made socks you want delivered, and how often you want them delivered.

For example: you can pick 3 pairs of calf socks (a bestseller), receive the first three pairs by letter post (worldwide postage is included, no messing with Post Office pickups) and in four months, receive three pair. In another four months, receive another three pair. You can choose to renew the subscription 11 months from your subscription date but are not obligated. (There’s even subscriptions for briefs/boxers and t-shirts.)

Give the gift that keeps on giving, every step of the way.

Basket Bundles: A concentration of small gifts could make up for not purchasing some high tech, puzzling piece of technology tougher than a Rubix cube and with twice as many options – Joyce’s Baskets has a selection of baskets geared toward the men in your life, ranging from Golf gifts or Sports fans gifts containing different goodies.

Harleys and Hotrods: Peterson’s Harley-Davidson in Miami is hosting its 3rd Annual Father’s Day Harleys and Hotrods Show. Take the honorable man (or men) to this free open show featuring free lunch to the first 100 entries, $400 in cash giveaways, and live music from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Geared perfectly for your favorite father!

Ft Lauderdale Dining – The Mai Kai Restaurant Jun 18

For those of you South Floridians, Ft. Lauderdale diners, and vacationers at the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort – feel like getting away to the South Seas for some South Pacific fun?

It’s authentic, and right in your own back yard. If you’re thinking orchids, leis, ti leaves, tiki torches and dancers with hips you didn’t know could move that much, you’re on mark.

mai kai restaurantThe Mai Kai Restaurant is bonafied gem, combining exquisite cuisine and fascinating entertainment, all while introducing Polynesian culture on stage or tableside.

Cross the wooden plank bridge and enter paradise, complete with tiki torches, a thatch roof, all recreated to resemble an authentic Polynesian Village.

The Polynesian Revue, the team’s performance troupe of dancers and native Polynesian performers is an elaborate one – the owner and choreographer Mireille Thornton, a native Polynesian herself, began as one of the Revue’s original dancers in 1961 and is now part of the longest running Polynesian dance show in the United States.

With regular trips to Tahiti, New Zealand, Samoa, Aotearoa, and Hawaii Thornton is constantly reforming and redressing the dance show – even the costumes are hand made from painted tapa cloth, flowers, mother-of-pearl, feathers, abalone and small seashells.

Even as elaborate as the dance troupe is, the menu is equally as expansive in its ability – to cater to tastes, complex and comfortable. Only a few of the Mai Kai’s favorites include Lemongrass Pork Tenderloin, Fresh Yellowfin Tuna and Florida Grouper, Lobster Cantonese, ‘Oak Roasted’ Filet Mignon Madagascar, Indonesian Spiced Rack of Lamb, and the Hawaiian Orange Papaya Duck.

If you’re still needing more motivation to trip on over to this little paradise, there’s more: the before dinner, after dinner, and during dinner tropical drinks. Dreamed up by the restaurant’s resident “mixologist” the selection ranges from boutique wines for connoisseurs to frozen mixes blending fresh fruit and West Indies spices and syrups, rums, and coffees – all complete with a range of charming grog glasses and Mai Tai flutes.

The restaurant also offers elaborate private performances, be they for groups of 20 or even weddings and receptions, with demonstrations of authentic Hawaiian wedding dances and Samoan fire knife dances.

Packages vary depending on the day, with complete set menus as well as the option for drink packages – I’d encourage you to read the site yourself. It, too, is delightfully designed. Hulu on in with your honey or grab the kids, both are welcome and the experience is an absolute must.

Broward County Things To Do – Songwriter’s Showcase Jun 16

If you’d like your shot at reminiscing with timeworn tributes, or hearing what could be the next smash hit on the billboards, here’s your chance.

Personally, I’m a big music fan and there’s nothing better than being the first ear to something special, and something, or someone with promise to top the pop charts or sail the industry’s waves to stardom.

songwriter's showcaseEvery third Tuesday of the month, the Songwriter’s Showcase welcomes local, national, and international singers and songwriters to the Broward Center for Performing Arts.

Founded by Chrystal Hartigan, the event not only showcases these artists ready to toot their tune but welcomes aspiring artists and lyricists to share their work.

The curtains open at 8:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts’ Abdo New River Room, and the cover charge is $5 at the door.

A cash bar, too, is available for you to toast the promising artists crooning their material, or while you count flat notes and those brave souls as they stick it to stagefright for your personal entertainment.

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida – Waterway Café Jun 12

Welcome back, readers, and while it’s heating up into triple digits here, I’ve got another cool hotspot to share with you.

Just in case you’re in town for the weekend, for business or sneaking away with your sweetie with that sweet romance special, there’s a place in Palm Beach Gardens that’s worth the walk on the water. And so aptly named the Waterway Café.

Since 1986, the restaurant has served up phenomenal plates of sizzlin’ seafood, steak, pasta, chicken, and custom-made pizza entrees right alongside tooth-achin’ treats for desserts. Arguably one of the most famous restaurants in Palm Beach, and a so-called South Florida tradition in waterfront dining, this place serves up good food with a side of greatness.

In town for the weekend? Perfect! It’s when people pour into the café for filets, lunch, dinner, and the main attraction. Florida’s only floating bar bobs in the Intracoastal Waterway, offering a one of a kind view and super spot to be catered to by friendly staff and fabulous entertainment.

Refreshing tropical concoctions are served up while live music fills every guest’s ear (Friday through Sunday) when you’ve likely got the most time to sit back and relax and leave your worries with the waves at your feet.

Palm Beach Post has even boasted this place as a top choice in several award categories including: Best of the Palm Beaches, Best Restaurant for Out of Towners, Best Waterfront Dining, and Best Happy Hour.

With a new Tiki Bar in the works and new lunch hours, you’re welcome to find your own fun at the café under the sun, or under the moon be it through light fare, fantastic seafood, or live music. Stop by on Sunday to rumble with Palm Beach county’s own reggae band Sweet Justice.

For lunch, dinner, and happy hours, please visit their Web site or call 561.694.1700.
