The History of Singer Island, Florida Mar 30

Some places take true vision to become the incredible destinations that they are now; it takes the ability to see the diamond in the rough. An incredible oasis of 24-hour entertainment beset by desert on all sides, Las Vegas required such vision.

Still others are meant to be. This is not to belittle the immense effort put forth by the forebears of Singer Island, Florida as we know it today, but rather to express the profound luxury of this remarkable destination. With pristine beaches, bold vegetation, and peerless weather, that Paris Eugene Singer saw this humble island as a paradise is really no surprise at all. It always has been.

The area known today as Singer Island has only been settled since 1906, when a cobbled community of fishermen and squatters from Riviera Beach and even the Bahamas moved in and named the place Inlet City. The proximity to Gulf Stream waters was much desired by the Fishermen at the time.

Singer Island

In 1920, the 23rd son of sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer, Paris Eugene Singer, visited Palm Beach and the island and developed an immediate love of the area. Singer met local architect Addison Mizner, whom he promised to pay a yearly stipend of $6,000 if Mizner would work exclusively in the Singer Island area. Together the two set about the task of establishing the island as a luxury resort almost immediately, with plans for two hotels, one upscale and one modest, separated by a 36-hole golf course.

His passion far exceeding the reality of the times, Singer’s dreams were endangered by a slowing economy from 1925 and finally finished by the double-whammy of a major hurricane in 1928 and the 1929 stock market crash. The last of Singer’s material contributions, the unfinished Blue Heron hotel, was razed in 1940. (The Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort now stands where the Blue Heron once did).

All was not done for Singer Island, however. Beginning in 1940, a flurry of new interest came to town, most notably the purchase of 240 acres by hotel and railroad tycoon A. O. Edwards. Going far beyond Paris Singer’s comparatively-humble plans, Edwards built roadways, walkways, and parks, as well as the Inlet Court Hotel (later named the Colonnades). Not long after, he built a steel and concrete two-lane bridge which allowed passage over and through the Intracoastal Waterway.

After Edwards’ death, Chicago billionaire John D. MacArthur took up the task of Singer Island visionary and continued to develop the island, although his most important contribution was likely the donation of parklands made upon his death. In 1989, the MacArthur Beach State Park opened as a direct result.

All this time, from the mid-1950’s onwards, Singer Island has continued to see the growth of resorts, timeshare condominiums and other luxury facilities, slowly becoming the world-class vacation destination that it is today.

At the heart of the new Singer Island is the Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort. Come discover luxury over 100 years in the making!

Pet-Friendly Hotels in Florida – Hilton Singer Island Mar 23

As we said earlier, we believe that Singer Island and West Palm Beach should offer thrilling South Florida adventures for the whole family, and we mean the whole family. That’s why Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront Resort is among the most pet-friendly hotels in the Palm Beaches. Here are the facts straight from the Web site:

Large dogs are allowed, with a maximum weight of 75 lbs, and both beds and food/water bowls may be provided as available. While there is a $75 non-refundable accommodations fee, we’re happy to charge no additional service fees. Just try finding that on Singer Island!

Not to mention, this is much more than a great place to stay. This is a fantastic destination for getting out and having a fun time with your dog. Here are just three of many options throughout Singer Island, the Palm Beaches and South Florida:

Pet Friendly Hotels in Florida

MacArthur Beach State Park
10900 Jack Nicklaus Drive
North Palm Beach

Just a few minutes from our Palm Beach hotel, MacArthur Beach State Park is a sprawling 325-acre nature park and beach ideal for picnics and play. While dogs are not allowed on the beach or boardwalks, there are still plenty of easy, scenic nature trails to explore with your four-legged friend. Leash Required.

Lake Trail in Palm Beach
Quadrille Bridge at the Waterway
Palm Beach

This popular bike trail along the Intracoastal Waterway is paved and offers incredible views of the waterway and upscale Palm Beach neighborhoods, along with plenty of room for your animal to walk. Dogs are allowed, but this is no park, so be respectful of bikers and other pedestrians.

Pooch Pines at Okeeheelee Park
7715 Forest Hill Boulevard
West Palm Beach

This nearby option in West Palm Beach is what you’ve really been looking for: an off-leash dog park where your dog can really be his or herself. This well-equipped facility features two large dog sections, a small dog section, paved doggy wash station, shaded sitting areas, fido fountains, and plenty more. Like most dog parks, the rules are strict but have the safety and wellbeing of animals and their owners in mind. Dogs must not be aggressive, must be vaccinated and must be registered.

Of course, there’s plenty more for you dog-lovers to find, but this is a good start for any South Florida family vacation when it’s really the whole family who’s along for the ride.

See a Dragon at the Palm Beach Zoo! Mar 16

Well, not exactly, but at nine feet long and an average weight of 350 pounds, the fierce Komodo Dragon is the largest of all lizards, and the closest thing we have to the much-storied creatures of myth. The Palm Beach Zoo, already beloved for many impressive exhibits, has recently introduced the newest member of their family, Hannibal the Komodo Dragon, or “Hanna” as she’s known.

Komodo Dragon

Komodo dragons are primarily island-dwellers indigenous to Indonesia where they were discovered not even 100 years ago. Despite their size, they are capable runners and swimmers, easily exceeding human speeds, much to the surprise of the many people who have been victims to a sudden dragon attack. While few attacks on humans have been documented, this surprising aggression not only makes them dangerous, it makes them one of the more difficult animals to acclimate to containment. This combined with the endangerment of the species is in part why so few zoos are able to exhibit them.

The Palm Beach Zoo is elated to join the small number that do.

Hanna the Komodo Dragon was obtained from the Miami Metro Zoo in February and today is pleasing zoo guests by the thousands. Afraid she needs a friend? Don’t worry. Dragons are solitary creatures and are rarely seen in pairs or groups, coming together only to mate and occasionally to feed off large food sources when available.

Hanna is on display everyday at the Palm Beach Zoo, just minutes from our luxurious Singer Island hotel. Along with their newest guest, you’ll see over 1,100 amazing animals from all over the world. The zoo is open everyday except for Christmas and Thanksgiving, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last admittance is at 4:15 p.m. For more information about the zoo, Hanna, and all of the animal friends, click here.

Through March 31st, the Palm Beach Zoo is offering special half-off deals at their gift shop.

Enjoy!

Florida Golf Vacations – The Links at Madison Green Mar 11

With countless courses, unrivaled scenery, and sensational year-round weather, the golfing in South Florida and the Palm Beaches is a thing of legend. From time to time we’ll feature one of our favorite Palm Beach golf courses here on the blog, and we couldn’t have picked a better place to start.

South Florida Golf Vacations

The Links at Madison Green
2001 Crestwood Boulevard North
Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411 (Map it)
(866) 492-1828

Golf courses near Palm Beach, Florida run the gamut from traditional links-style to novice courses to championship and everything in between, but The Links at Madison Green is the perfect place to start for one reason: it’s a golfer’s golf course. Designed by architect John Sanford without the slightest concern for the beginning player, the course at Madison Green ranges from tricky to devilishly challenging over an impressive 7,051 yards from the championship tees.

Their Web site claims that even novice players can enjoy the game at Madison Green, and that may be true. The taxing slope of the fairways and delicate use of hazards provides an engaging learning experience, and the rich views dotted with towering palms, crystal pools and blue skies are sure to sooth even the most frustrated player. Just try not to lose yourself in a daydream.

You can learn a little bit more about The Links at Madison Green on their Web site, but I’m afraid it doesn’t do the course justice. What management has managed to make look quite plain is in fact an exemplary experience in person. At the moment, rates are available by phone call only. Consider signing up for their email newsletter a few weeks before your trip and you may be able to save with the included coupons.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more top-quality Palm Beach golf courses in the future.

Have a favorite course in the Palm Beach/Singer Island area? Let us know about it in the comments and we may feature your course soon.

Healthy Travel – The Eat Right™ Menu at Hilton Singer Island Mar 09

You’ve heard it before. Heck, you’ve probably said it before: “vacation calories don’t count”, “cruise calories don’t count”, “birthday calories don’t count”, “I had a bad day calories don’t count”, “I’m wearing a green hat calories don’t count.” Whatever the reason, I’ve got some bad news: they count!

Let’s face it, it’s easy to stray off diet when traveling. The irregular hours, the unfamiliar location, the have-to mentality – it can all contribute to an unrelenting feeding frenzy that would make the Tasmanian Devil jealous. When traveling to a luxurious southern Florida resort like Singer Island, the temptation can feel even stronger.

At Hilton Singer Island Resort we encourage the indulgent, epicurean escape that many of our guests desire. But we also take pride in offering sensible options for our guests, because we know that sometimes the greatest service of all is making it easy to avoid the hassles of the daily grind, including special diets.

That’s why we’re so excited to offer the Hilton Eat RightTM Menu. The executive chef at Coconuts on the Beach, our fanciful on-site Palm Beach Restaurant, has devised a specialized bill of fare that’s as healthy as it is delicious. We’ve taken the bold, region-inspired cuisine of the regular menu and applied it a selection of fine dishes with lower fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and calories than regular menu items. Dive into zesty Smoked Chicken Linguine, the sweet and savory Balsamic Marinated Pork Tenderloin, and the sensational Greek Bread Salad.

Eat RightTM Menu options are available for breakfast, lunch, dinner and room service.

Don’t toss calories aside ever again. We say count them, and make them count!

Enjoy!
